Dynamics of social groups, Birth of a group, or Transition from a group to a group state - Organizational behavior

Dynamics of social groups

In this section we will talk about the development of non-conditional, but real groups, about mostly small contact groups and their dynamics over time-from the short period of their existence (sometimes all this ends) to the long-term effective work of "held" group. Why is it effective? If any real group turns out to be ineffective, then it will simply cease to exist. The informal group itself will disintegrate, as it will lose its binding foundation - joint activities aimed at achieving a common goal, and the formal group will be officially disbanded or reformed for the same reasons.

The birth of a group, or the transition from a group to a group state

Imagine the situation, that in some place, several people happened to meet. They see each other, they often engage in the same kind of activity (for example, they have lunch in a cafe). However, this is not yet a group. The group will appear when their activities cease to be just the same, but will turn into a joint one for any reason. Even if it is short enough, but if the activity of this group, united for the time being, is emotionally rich or vital, membership in it can be remembered for life, regardless of whether the person keeps in touch with her in the future.

Also in the newly formed working and training groups. Coming every day to work, you can perform not the general, but the same with colleagues activity. But as soon as one wants to get acquainted and establish a closer contact, an informal group will begin to form, which can grow (or not) to the full composition of the formal group.

Another situation is possible when the new head of the division does not want to establish informal personal relationships, not only with subordinates, but also with colleagues in the management team. Cold, but correct service interactions and strict observance of subordination are not a habitual way for Russian culture to build business relations. But for many expats (representatives of other countries working in the organization both in the position of a leader and in the positions of specialists) this is an absolute norm, not only for the period of the trip, but also for the period of work in one's own country. How then can a given person become a real member of an old or newly created group headed or advised by him? Only through joint activities! It is not necessary to be friends and enter into informal contact. The main thing is to work together to achieve a common goal. Under this guidance, a capable formal group will begin to be formed.

In any case, the interaction of people gathered for any reason is important for group formation. And for the group to continue its existence for a long time, this reason should be something socially significant.

With formal groups, everything is clear: they must achieve the goals they need, other groups (units) of the organization or organization as a whole. Moreover, if the content of these goals can inspire the pride of employees, they can remain members of this formal group under other not very favorable circumstances (low wages, hard working conditions, etc.), especially if close informal relationships are established.

What about informal groups? If they do something useful for other social groups (like a spontaneous voluntary unification of enthusiasts), then, even without formalization, they can develop to very high stages of group effectiveness. If they do useful only for the members of their group (in the order of voluntary mutual assistance), then in due course the members of the group can find more interesting partners and leave the group, as well as the specialists leaving the best work leave the formal group.

So, at the birth of a real small group, we observe the union of people to carry out joint activities with a more or less conscious acceptance of a common goal. What stages do you need to go through to a potential group to become a real high-performance group?
