Urban life is associated with us with intelligence, power, danger; suburbs and villages - with family life, peace, closeness to nature and security. Although these styles of life are social inventions, only the city is perceived by us as an entirely artificial environment. Common features of urban culture, distinguishing it from rural, are such signs as a high density of urban development; the presence of a large number of transport routes of social and cultural (courtyards, streets, avenues, squares, parks) and engineering purposes (highways and traffic junctions, railway junctions and stations, water and telecommunications networks).
The cultural space of the city is organized in a completely different way than in the countryside: there is a wide choice of institutions of leisure, life and culture (parks of culture and recreation, attractions, dry cleaners and laundries, cafes and restaurants, theaters and museums, libraries, galleries, dance halls, etc.); the presence of a huge number of strangers (the anonymity of social relations), which makes the individual feel freer and relaxed and at the same time gets the opportunity to create or choose a circle of communication on interests. A distinctive feature of the city line is loneliness in the crowd, the opportunity for a long time not to communicate with anyone, the replacement of personal contacts by phone calls, the possibility of almost uncontrollably engage in dubious and criminal cases. A characteristic feature of urban life and urban culture is transport fatigue, arising from daily travel to long distances and crowding in public transport. Nervous overloads can also be caused by a more strained than in the village, and by a uniform labor rhythm, standing in lines, rush demand and scarcity, rallies and demonstrations, permanent presence in the crowd (in the streets, in transport, shops).

The urban environment is saturated with a large number of harmful and carcinogenic substances, than rural. Chlorinated, and not spring water, polluted by the numerous machines and plants of the city air, increased noise and dustiness of the atmosphere: this environment is less familiar to the human body than the traditional village. The fact is that it arose only in the last century and biologically a person did not have time to adapt to it. Hence the weakened health and the desire of the townspeople to use all available means to support it. The level of medical care, the number of appeals to doctors and those involved in physical culture and health activities of people in the city is much greater than in the village. Long detachment from wildlife also adversely affects the citizens, as a consequence - a massive hobby gardening, not typical of the villagers. The suburban area and the dacha today are indispensable attributes of the urban culture.
If rural culture is inherent triune place of work, place of residence and recreation, then for urban culture is characterized by the opposite trend. Most of the institutions of culture and business are concentrated in the center of the city, and most of the inhabitants live in the so-called "sleeping areas" on the outskirts. Therefore, people travel much more often and more often in public or personal transport. Citizens more often than villagers, go on vacation to other cities and countries.
The social organization of modern cities is characterized by high dynamism of structure, the multiplicity and variety of external and internal links, the absence of closed social "cells" (community, shop). The urban way of life is characterized by a wide variety of life styles, needs, tastes, habits. Traditions and customs play a much smaller role in the city than in the countryside. Large cities, attracting populations from vast areas, become hotbeds of mixing different ethnic groups, their mutual acculturation and assimilation.
