What should fiction writers know about characters

There are four things that writers, who work in fiction genre, should remember about characters:
  • Show conflict, development of relations, household details
  • Don’t paint your characters in black and white
  • Find an interesting and vivid name
  • Show the worldview of the character.

Fiction heroes remain boring when the reader does not see in them either a puzzle, no prehistory, no conflict, no development of relations, no household details. You should use little things that would show their lives. Show to readers that these people are engaged in something beyond the narrative. They should do something, and not as bad actors, who, having played their stage, obediently leave behind the scenes and tread there, in the dark.

Of course, such characters do not cause any interest or sympathy. Another problem occurs when all the characters are painted in one color - either white or black. These are good, these are bad – a good fiction story doesn’t work like that. The author should show that the "bad" have their own truth, but "good" ones are not always right and perfect, they also make annoying, unforgivable mistakes. The one who seems, for example, at first glance to be bad, in fact, turns out to be right.

In addition, it is not superfluous to think carefully over the name of the main character. It is better if the name (or combination of two names) is sonorous and not very common. You can take a look with the names of the most beloved literary heroes of our time - are there many John-Jack-Ann? If the plot allows, for some of the characters, in general, it's better to replace the names with sonorous, vivid nicknames. The reader will have a better chance of remembering them. Besides, the nicknames have one more useful point - unlike the names, they "tell" certain information about the character.

Show the worldview of the character. A person with a well-thought-out value system, even if different from my own, always looks original against the background of blurred humanistic characters in the Hollywood style, which, alas, filled many stories, even good ones. Due to the non-standard character, the plot immediately revives, it is interesting to observe its reactions.

Find the right decorations for the story

Very often the world in which the story takes place is weak. No specifics, nothing to "feel", no taste, no color, no smell, no bright pictures or images. It is very bad if there is no texture and no credibility. The main reason for that is an insufficient thoughtfulness. However, you can fix that. If most of the story takes place in a room or in a cottage, draw a plan of the room or villa on a separate sheet.

If the decoration for your fiction story is the besieged garrison – you should draw this garrison. Think about where to look and how to look. And then, with each movement of the heroes, go through the plan. Find where did the hero go from, what passed, how long did it take him, whom he could meet on the road, what to see. It does not need to be painted in detail every time, but it is necessary for the author himself to clearly represent and see everything. If the fiction writers don’t see the picture, then it does not flash in the reader's head either.Do not forget about the landscape, especially if it's extraterrestrial:

  • Show the surrounding landscape,
  • Think about the time of year and weather changes.

Then the world around will play with colors, then the reader will believe in it. The same applies to everyday life - to think about the life, in general, to saturate the narrative with original, non-template details – is the purpose of a good writer. In general: carefully think over the world that you are painting, and you will be surprised yourself how interesting your texts can become.

Find the right plot for the fiction writing

In the works of many beginners, the plot is very often the most disastrous moment. The first phrase is the trigger, so it should catch the reader. The same applies to the first paragraph and the introduction as a whole. Therefore, you need to think over the introduction more thoroughly than over the rest of the text (except the conclusion - the last phrase is also very important). There must be something bright, paradoxical, and necessarily stylistically flawless.

An open ending is much better at capturing, if the author himself still thought through a concrete variant of the development of events, although he did not finish it. If fiction writers don’t know 'what was there further', it is always felt. One feels the emptiness and inability of the author to think through what he wants to say. Thereby, always make everything clear when writing the conclusion and finish the plot.

The composition in the fiction

The topics that effective fiction writers should not use

The most used ones are the stories about the space pilots, or the space-hunters fighting with different reptiles, either pacifying the rebellious colonies or traveling with goods from the end to the end of the universe. It implies the presence of at least one space-empire with at least one space-emperor. And, as a rule, the fate of mankind is at stake. It may be objected that these are generic signs of a subgenre. However, the genre has to be more colored, the author should invent something new.

Chrono paradoxes and travels in time, usually in the past, in order to fix something there are also cliché. Dragon bearing is also not the best option for the fiction nowadays if you want to invent something original.

It also includes stories related to how the director is a devil and begins to offer a contract. Computer games cannot also be a source of the original idea. It concerns stories that the world of a popular game uses for the entourage. Texts that do not appeal directly to computer games, but are exactly torn from them, are also not the best idea. The texts parasitizing on games, as a rule, are very weak and don’t get the audience.

Robo wars, cloning, and post-apocalypses

Post-apocalyptic plots are well known. For example, happened terribly, and nuclear bombs were flapped, the planet was covered with deadly mushrooms. Human civilization disappeared, and on its wreckage, there were mutants and a bunch of feral people. That's about their miserable life-story. Robo wars are also not a source for interesting ideas. One other popular source of ideas for the story is the solution of the great mysteries. For example, who built the pyramids of Egypt. Was it Atlanteans, aliens, or snowmen?
