Fundations program

Wilson is an acknowledged leader in the structured andmultisensory programs of language that brings explicit andsystematic instruction to the K-3 classroom. Using the principlesof the system of Wilson reading, the Fundations offers thematerials based on research as well as strategies important to athorough spelling, reading, and handwriting program.

The Fundations makes the learning to read a fun activity whileestablishing the foundation for the literacy for life. K-3students get a methodical program in the important foundationalskills.

Fundations follows the strict career- and college standards ofthe state. Even though Fundations includes some strategies ofcomprehension, it must be united with the main literature-basedprogram of the language arts for a comprehensive and integratedapproach to spelling and reading.

Those students who enter Fundations K level in kindergarten, areintroduced the activities to learn alphabetical order,letter-keyword-sound, and the skills of letter formation.

The power of this program is that it applies a comprehensiveapproach to teaching skills making an everyday lesson to teachand then reinforce the appropriate skills. Fundations isstructured, multisensory, cumulative, systematic, and explicitprogram that is based on a thorough and accurate documentedresearch. The program concentrates on the development of studentsby distinguishing instruction and actively engaging students intheir learning.

Fundations as part of the MTSS

Fundations is important to a multi-tiered systems of support(MTSS) model offering scientifically-founded instruction in Tierone and an early interference program for students who may havereading problems. MTSS is the model based on prevention thatacknowledges various reasons for why a child may struggle tolearn when a certain learning disability is only one of a fewpossible reasons. Using the MTSS model allows teachers tointervene and identify early to avert students from developingworse reading deficits, and assist to more clearly determine thestudents who have difficulties in learning as a result of certainlearning disability. Their main goal is to avert the dominoeffect of kids developing weaknesses in foundational skills thatovertime lead to the deficits in higher level reading skills likethe understanding of a difficult text.

To help implement the MTSS model, the monitoring of progress isincluded into Fundations allowing students, who require a moreintense program, to be noticed before going through years offight.

Schools that use Fundations only of the Tier two have thestandard Fundations lesson scheduled five days a week and lasting30 minutes each in small groups. Additional interference lessonsshould be scheduled as decided by progress monitoring.
