Main function of BPI/SEC is to stop users of cable tv modem from communicating with each other. Here question is how this goal is achieved and answer could it be is performed by encrypting data that movement between users and CMTS. 56bit DES encryption is utilized by BPI and BPI Plus while on the other hand 128bit AES encryption is used by SEC. Key that is utilized for encryption is kept up to date on periodical bases. Period to update this encryption key is set by service provider. Upgrading encryption key makes whole system better.

BPI/SEC makes system secure by allowing wire operators to refuse service need if it's not created by certified cable tv modem or certified user. BPI Plus have great power to safeguard service. Authentication is based on digital certificate. Open public key infrastructure is utilized which is predicated on digital certificate government bodies from recognition testers. An adapter is soldered on PCB (printed circuit plank) of modem then through parallel wire custom firmware is uploaded to modem.

If we've bought a cable television modem from market then to modify it isn't illegal. To utilize this modem over a networking which we have authorization or it is our own is also not illegal. It is clear that internet service agency has some system which notifies them if some anonymous modem is using such high amount of bandwidth not limited to downloading as well for uploading. one should remember that cable internet connection is distributed between individuals using such an high bandwidth will give troubles to other users on network.

3. 1 uncapping using hacked firmware

As mentioned before there are two methods to modify modems first one called uncapping using hacked firmware will be exhibited in this section. Second method called DHCP make will be demonstrated in next section. Uncapping using hacked firmware method works on Motorola SB4100, SB4101, SB4200. This method does not work on any other modem. Once we are in European countries and under EuroDocsis system there are some more constraints. So for EruoDOCSIS this method works only on SB4200. Let us move forward toward step 1 1.

STEP 1

To perform the first step modem should be connected on Ethernet dock on RJ 45 connection. We should start any browser and should type address http://192. 168. 100. 1. It will look like flowing picture.

This picture is screen capture of my Motorola SB 4200 modem which I specially bought from USA to do experiments for this newspaper. After starting address http://192. 168. 100. 1 we have to click on settings link then select reset all defaults. Then we can unplug vitality of modem. No need to reboot modem only needs to do reset all defaults. Normally it does not take very long time.

STEP 2

In step 2 2 we is going to network configurations those are available in control panel and we'll change network placing as shown in picture.

We will established ip address 192. 168. 100. 10 subnet 255. 255. 255. 0 and gateway 192. 168. 100. 1. but we won't make any changes to DNS environment.

STEP 3

In step three 3 we will start software call NetBoot. We will make sure that 'Enable FTP Server' and 'Automobile IP' are examined. Then we will hook up power cable to modem. We will hang on about about a minute then we will press button 'boot over network'. We will hang on till Netboot give message that 'FTP Consumer has been disconnected and model has done with world wide web booting. We won't close Netboot windowpane and will go on to next thing.

This picture is of NetBoot software. It is before modem has wager boot. In FTP root path we select a data file that is submitted in modem during net boot process.

Above picture is after modem has successfully net boot. By net boot a file called vxWorks. st us published to modem.

STEP 4

When modem finishes booting we available configuration page with address http://192. 168. 100. 1. Now we can see an extra menu in modem firmware it is hack menu. We will choose it and we'll scroll down till we see "Update Cable Modem Firmware". We will select Browse button to check out related firmware for SB 4200. Please note this is not original firmware it is hacked firmware that people will upload in modem. We will click on start upgrade button. Now modem begins upgrading firmware. At this time we will not unplug modem and we will not change page at internet browser. we will wait around till modem reboots. Typically it take less than five minutes. Once modem will reboot we will again to go http://192. 168. 100. 1 on internet browser to confirm that firmware is up to date. We can look for hack tabs if it's there or not. If it there it means firmware is permanently filled in modem.

STEP 5

As brought up already during booting wire modem get configuration document from internet provider and this construction file handles download and upload quickness of modem. For uncapping cable modems we need a configuration file which may have higher upload and download them ours.

In picture of step 4 4 there is one sniffer tab. This sniffer stand includes hacked firmware that we have install in step 4. This sniffer tab perform of task to sniff configuration file. At this point we are assuming that our internet service provider using DOCSIS 1. 1 means cable tv modem is authenticated on established of Apple pc address no additional tuff security check are performed. Aswell we are let's assume that we've tariff plan from internet service provider and a modem. In hacked firmware under hack tab we've 'Cable Modem Identification'. It allows us to give any mac pc address. So what we've done is we put our modem's address that has from internet service provider in field 'HFC Macintosh Address' as show in picture.

As we copied Apple pc of internet service provider modem into our modem so our modem with hacked firmware will go surfing. Now what we must do is looking forward to a while until sniffer tabs in hacked firmware will sniff conjugation record and it will revise it in config list. Typically config name are very similar with tariff plan titles. Some internet service provider also identify config file with Apple pc name to which data file is assigned. Construction files can even be dynamic means whenever modem boots it get another config file. If our modem has already sniffed a settings file it is very user friendly it simply need to continue hack tab enter name of settings file that people needs to try then click on save change. We will reboot modem and on hack tab we can look for maximum download and upload velocity to verify that another data file is being utilized by modem as config document. Here it is important that people can publish config file that we wants. How much speed a particular data file have is not important because after we can upload configuration file of your choice then we can choose a document with better rates of speed and upload it.

3. 2 Uncapping with DHCP Force

1. Initially we will see MAC address of our cable television modem that is normally written in a sticker on lower part of modem maybe we can find it on documents those includes modem. We will start DHCP Force software and give our modem MAC address then we will use function called discover. Now it is time to write down values those are in containers. We could also find modem information such as MAC addresses on modem configuration site for example http:// 192. 168. 100. 1.

2. We will mount and start software called SNMP cfg Admin. Windowpane will appear identical to in number 7. At bottom of software window is ip range. In first box we will released ip that is assigned to our modem for example 80. 108. 45. 188 in second field we will put higher value for example 80. 108. 45. 255. We will click on mass getter button to get labels of configuration file labels. Once this software has some name in list by visiting + indication we can get ip address of corresponding modem. By adding ip in DHCP drive we can know which data file has faster download and upload configurations. If SNMP cfg Admin do not display any result after pressing 'Mass Getter' it means game is bit complicated if so we have to retrieve config file from our modem and start it with config editor software and we have to learn community string. This string we will enter in SNMP cfg Admin to find out brands of config documents.

3. now we will start DHCP push software. First we will disable marketing sense under DHCP menu. After disabling this option we have to restart computer. As computer begins again we will put our Mac pc address and press 'Discover' button as finding finishes we changes config data file name those we've found in SNMP cfg Admin software. We will click start button on DHCP software and unplug cable modem and then connect again. We must hold out till modem fully reboot then we can stop DHCP drive. If all would be effectively followed we'd be on faster speed but we should not reboot modem it'll bring us on default speed given by online sites provider.
