Machine translation program PROMT

Programs of automatic (machine ) translation of text on the developed algorithms translate phrases in the source language into text in another language. Examples of programs: PROMT, Socrates.

The most powerful PROMT translator program is designed for translating documents of various formats, web pages, search queries, e-mail, as well as providing the opportunity to extract terminology from texts. In view of morphological, syntactic and semantic links, a coherent translation of texts of general or special (branch) content is provided. Translation can be edited by applying dictionaries from different languages: from English, French, German, Spanish, Italian to United States and vice versa.

The program can open documents for translation of Word, RTF, HTML, TXT, PDF documents. Translation panes are embedded in applications: Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FrontPage and Outlook, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Skype, Adobe Acrobat Reader, etc.

The quality of translation is enhanced by means of linguistic tuning:

• Translation memory - a database containing a set of previously translated texts. A record in the database corresponds to a segment or translation unit (usually one sentence, less often part of the sentence or a paragraph). If the source translation unit is the same as the translation unit in the database, it can be automatically inserted into the translation;

• specialized dictionaries - setting topics determines which dictionaries to connect, which words to leave without translation;

• creating and editing user dictionaries.

Instant translation tool allows you to move the cursor to a specific word and see the label with the translation.

After the program is installed, the PROMT item is created in the Start, Programs menu. The main menu of the program offers you to choose the task variant for the job. Option Fast translation is used for small text that is copied to the program window (Figure 14.1).

In order to improve the quality of the translation of complex texts with a large number of specialized vocabulary, the PROMT program offers an extensive set of settings (Figure 14.2).

The program creates a working Promt document, in which the original and the translation form a pair of texts linked " and to which the translator can repeatedly apply, study, edit and adjust:

• terms of translation (subject matter) - list of dictionaries to be connected;

• reserved words and sections of text that do not require translation;

• a list of words not found in connected dictionaries or having multiple translation options.

Opening translation files and translation modes

Different modes of translation are possible in PROMT.

• Open the finished text file and translate it.

• Create a new document for translation: type text in the document window or copy it from another open application to the translation window and translate. It is possible to accumulate text by copying several fragments into the memory buffer from another program and inserting it together or separately with the Edit , Buffer Clearance , Paste from Promt Clipboard.

• Translation of documents directly into Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.) and web pages in browsers.

If you need to open a file with the finished text and translate it, you should give the command File , Open and specify the folder and the file to be translated.

The PROMT program can open files for various formats for translation:

text (txt) - from the Notepad program (txt) with or without markup on strings, in a special Unicode encoding, the text of the email;

Word documents ( doc and docx), Rich Text Rich Text from Word Pad;

htm, xml files - web pages, HTML documents;

PDF - Portable document format;

Promt document is the working PROMT file created earlier.

Opening a file for translation, the program converts it to a translation format. For example, after reading the extension doc from the interpol.doc file, the program in the dialog box will suggest evaluating the format of the opened file as Word Document. Because the same file name extension is found for files of different formats, it is necessary in the Convert file view the list of substitutions File type and, if necessary, change the definition of Convert file , performed by PROMT, to correct formatting.

Type Stripped text is selected for texts with forced line breaks in paragraphs, which are created by some programs, for example, when working with files that contain copied texts of web pages or materials of certain regulatory databases . In Word, the paragraph lines are usually placed automatically on the width of the sheet, and in the split text, the right border of each paragraph line is set by forcing the end of the paragraph character, as if pressing the Enter key. This text in the translation program must be opened with the refinement splitting into strings, so that the translation program does not take the end of the line as the end of the paragraph. The markup on paragraphs will be preserved. If after opening a document its sentences are divided into lines as paragraphs (this can be seen by the side highlighting of the paragraph), you must close the file without translation and open it again, indicating the type of the format Text with a breakdown into strings.

If you need to type the source code from the keyboard or paste it from another program, and then translate it, you should give the command File, New. In the Direction of Translation line, specify: English-United States, United States-English, German-United States , etc. A new document window opens, where you can type the text.

If the source contains tables or columns, it is recommended to translate the document into the program where the document was created (Word, Excel), or temporarily convert the table into text, and then translate it.

The Translate command enables the translation of all text. In the button, the options of the commands are expanded to translate the entire document, the selected text, the current paragraph, the next paragraph. You can immediately translate all the text from beginning to end or translate the text in paragraphs, selected parts and adjust as you translate. The paragraph in which the text cursor is located is highlighted by a bar to the left of the text.

To translate a few selected paragraphs, use the Translate, Selected paragraphs.

Translate, Current paragraph - the translation of the paragraph in which the cursor is positioned (the paragraph is highlighted by the sidebar).

The Translate command, Next paragraph translates the next paragraph from those that have not yet been translated or those that the user has previously modified to translate (if the translation was corrected, the changes already made will be lost after this command).

The options for translating the word, of the mouse click, appear in the dictionary pane.

Change the direction of translation is given in the line Translation, Direction of translation: from which language and on what text to translate. From the list choose the necessary direction of the translation, for example: English-United States, United States-English, German-United States, French-United States. So you can change the direction of translation on selected paragraphs and translate the text in several languages.
