Compare Two Theories Of Learning Education Essay

This essay is likely to be speaking about two different theories of learning within the first Years Foundation Stage. The two theories that are going to be compared will be the theory of Operant Conditioning that was conducted by Skinner and the next was the Community Learning Theory that was conducted by Bandura. The first theory that will be talked about is Operant Conditioning.

B F Skinner was a behaviourist who examined children's behaviour and out of this he developed the theory of Operant Conditioning. Skinner developed the idea of Operant Conditioning the work of Edward Thorndike. One definition of Operant Conditioning is: "behaviour that is accompanied by pleasant consequences tend to be repeated and thus learned. Behaviour that is accompanied by unpleasant consequences tends never to be repeated and thus not discovered. " (Alberto and Troutman, 2006; pg. 12). Operant Conditioning includes two different types of support. The first kind of support is positive reinforcement. Positive encouragement is a way of reinforcing a desired behaviour in children through positive feedback or rewards. For instance, in terms of learning, a practitioner may praise a kid for giving the correct answer to a question. You will find two different types of positive encouragement. These are positive reinforcers and negative reinforcers. Positive reinforcers are when a positive outcome is used as a reward. So for example, if a kid is behaving a sticker will be given to them at the end of your day. Negative reinforcers are when something negative is recinded when the kid will something good. So for example, if a kid has not behaved and have been told they are going to be lacking some of their play and the child will something good down the road the child will have their play went back. The second kind of reinforcement is negative support. This is also known as punishment. Negative encouragement can be explained by the removal of a negative stimulus to boost the likelihood of the child acting in the required way. For example, if two children are regularly talking to the other person negative support would involve separating both children in order that they cannot speak to each other. You will discover two different kinds of negative support. They are negative punishment and positive punishment. Negative abuse is where something positive the kid has been given is recinded from them after bad behavior. If the school uses a chart system like a rainbow chart to show children's behavior and a child has behaved throughout the day and had their name placed on the rainbow, if they then misbehave they'll be moved lower down the chart to the cloud. Positive punishment is where in fact the child is misbehaving and they have a poor response for this. A good example of this is where the child a child gets scolded for poor behaviour. Another exemplory case of that's where a child rocks on their and are informed off for it. If they repeat and fall off of the chair and hurt themselves they'll learn never to repeat. Children within the first Years Foundation Level are still learning the difference between what's right and what's wrong. Operant Fitness Theory is pertinent to children of this age group because of the fact that the key idea of this theory is reward and abuse. If children are rewarded for good behaviour and punished for bad behaviour consistently, they will learn the correct way to respond.

Skinner's Operant Fitness Theory can clearly be seen in my setting up. Throughout my establishing each of the classes use Operant Conditioning a great deal with the children. In my own particular class, the teacher runs on the system known as the rainbow system. The children's names start on the sun at the start of your day and if they behave effectively and work very difficult then there name will be transferred up to the rainbow and if they continue steadily to work hard then their brands progress to the container of gold. By the end of the day if there are children whose titles remain on the container of gold then they receive a sticker. However, if the children are being disruptive, they receive a alert by the professor and if they keep on then their names and moved right down to the cloudy sky image and then if they still carry on their titles will be relocated right down to the rain cloud. Personally i think that Operant Conditioning theory is relevant in my setting up as it is used consistently throughout the institution. Firstly, it is not only in the EYFS it can be used, additionally it is used in all of the other classes by having a merit system. The merit system is very good as if the children get enough merits over summer and winter and their time in the institution they get a compensation. Also, on Athletics Day, they university is put into six different groups if the merits each young one gets over summer and winter for his or her group is put into the full total they obtain on Activities Day and the group that wins is given the House Cup. Another reason Personally i think that Operant Fitness is relevant in my own setting is because of the fact that it is consistent throughout the whole school. It is not just used in the classroom, in addition they use it in assemblies. For instance, throughout the assemblies the practitioners walk around and observe the children and those that are behaving throughout the entire assembly will obtain merit points to hand to their educator. However, there are a few weaknesses in the ways in which this technique in used in my setting. For instance, although it may be beneficial, Personally i think that not absolutely all of the children are recognised for their good behaviour. Although I understand that it could be problematic for the practitioners to discover all the children that are behaving well, some of the kids may believe that they aren't discovered for behaving correctly.

The second theory where is going to be discussed within this article is Albert Bandura's Friendly Learning Theory. Albert Bandura is a behaviourist theorist. Community Learning Theory is situated mainly on Behaviourism and Cognitive Theory. The primary ideas behind the Public Learning Theory are modelling and observation. An example of Community Learning Theory within a school setting up is whenever a child is misbehaving and another child who's very acquainted with child imitates their behavior. Social Learning Theory is relevant to the first Years Foundation Stage due to the fact that the main element concept of this specific theory is imitation and modelling. Children of this level and era tend to copy others in conditions of how they behave. They also tend to copy those that are role models to them.

Bandura's Friendly Learning Theory is also noticeable within my positioning. Throughout the university the teachers act as good role models for the children and they make an effort to get children to reproduce good behaviour. For instance in my placement the teachers make an effort to get the children to reproduce good behaviour that they see within the classroom setting. So if a child is not sitting silently and another child is the tutor will probably touch upon the child's good behavior. Then the professor will tell the child misbehaving that should act the way the other child is performing. The theory is also apparent within my location through the experts themselves. For instance, children have a tendency to imitate the ways in which their teachers behave, so the professionals within my setting behave in ways in which they want the kids to behave so the children will replicate good behaviour. I feel that theory is also relevant in my placement. There are a few strengths and weaknesses to the theory being used in the EYFS. First of all the advantages of by using theory in my own positioning are that if a child is behaving well in the classroom, other children around them will copy this behaviour. However, a weakness of this theory getting used within my placement is that children who are not behaving and are not resolved by the practitioner are also more likely to have that behavior imitated by other children in the category that could lead to many of the children behaving in this way.

Operant Conditioning and Sociable Learning Theory will vary in many different ways. First of all; in Operant Fitness the main concentrate is on rewarding good behaviour and punishing bad behavior, but in Public Learning Theory the primary focus is on children replicating behaviours they have observed and observed from their role models. Another way in which operant conditioning and sociable learning theory differ from each other is at terms of when children learn. First of all, in operant conditioning, children understand how to act from what they have observed previously, whereas with public learning theory, children learn from each experience when they imitate a behavior from the practitioner or their classmates.

Both of the theories are also similar in many various ways. First of all, both of the theories focus on children observing behavior and behaving in a manner that they may have learnt is the appropriate way. So for example in operant conditioning the children notice other children around them behaving to get rewards or they themselves have behaved in order to get rewards and they have learnt that to receive the reward they have to behave the same way where they do before. In communal learning theory the children observe other folks around them behaving in a specific way and they imitate this behavior, particularly if it is someone they consider a role model or it is someone who they are extremely good friends with.

To conclude, both of these theories are extremely useful to use within a classroom setting when working with youngsters. However, from my experience Personally i think that Bandura's Sociable Learning Theory, may not be the best theory to utilize when working with the EYFS due to the fact that the kids are very young, nor quite understand the idea of bad and the good behaviour plus they do tend to imitate the behaviour of those around them they are friends with. Overall, I do believe that although there are restrictions when using Social Learning Theory both Operant Fitness and Public Learning Theory do work very well together in assisting professionals in educating the kids within the EYFS.
