Deep River Shusaku Endo British Literature Essay

Shusaku Endo has had a long profession in literary works. He has written some very convincing novels that dive deep into the trip of spiritual learning. He has fixated almost all of his writings on two main crossing issues such as eastern and traditional western cultures specifically between Japanese culture and Christianity. His novels have sited a wide range of issues of social and spiritual personal information, alienation, and personal pledge to trust. The storyline he composed "Deep River" is a fascinating voyage of revelation for the character types involved, especially the partnership between Mitsuko has with Otsu.

Otsu and Mitsuko first meet in college or university, Otsu is an awkward religious scholar and Mitsuko is a woman who does not have any real passion forever. She determines she wishes to steal Otsu away from the god he feels in. She invites Otsu to a celebration to ask him about his values, to my shock he comes clean expressing he is doubtful of what he thinks in. Mitsuko pushes Otsu to drink and won't stop forcing him until he forsakes god, but he wines till he throws up, never giving up on god. No it appears like these two could not see each other again after something like that. For your dismay Mitsuko can't leave Otsu be, she says he must falsify his idea in god. She then gives him the opportunity to be her sweetheart if he provides up his trust. I truthfully can't believe that anyone would induce that upon someone. To my dismay they wrap up making love and dating for several months until she breaks his heart. Otsu now depressed, leaves and doesn't return, although they do of course, meet again. Mitsuko has a challenge because she feels no love in life; she goes through her life which story with a horrible feeling of emptiness in herself

On Mitsuko's Honeymoon rather than hanging out with her new hubby she hears Otsu is in France and queries him out. They hook up and come up with a new word for god "onion" because to Mitsuko the term god means nothing at all. Otsu is on the complete opposite page, stating god is everything all over the place. The French actually say he's a heretic for his values that other religions are also true and that god uses both sin and hurting for the higher good. Otsu is opposed by his instructors due to this statement he gives "evil lurks within good, and good thingsgood things can lie within evil as well" (65). I believe what Endo is trying to express be that god has the capacity to convert every sin into some kind of good. Later in the storyplot another quote comes up, "god has many faces. I don't think god exists exclusively in the churches and chapels of Europe. I think he is also among the Jews and the Buddhists and the Hindus" (121). Otsu desires to reside in a life of selfless sacrifice for all people, which at that time Mitsuko finds to be always a misuse of time. I really believe the reason why she seeks out Otsu so often in the story even though she doesn't really know very well what it she actually is searching for she is looking for god which in the long run brings love. Otsu implies a perception in unity of all. He believes in merging all faiths and caring for all mankind, creating an enormous interpersonal assemblage of love.

Even with being called a heretic, Otsu never revokes his values and maintains a strong faith and rely upon Jesus. While speaking with Mitsuko he makes a decision to share with her he has dedicated his existence to chasing only one thing: "the love of that onion", "Love is all the onion has imparted to us. Finished. we have been most lacking in our modern world is love; love is finished. no one believes in anymore; love is exactly what everyone mockingly laughs at, and that's the reason someone like me desires to follow my onion with dumb sincerity" (119). Otsu uses his beliefs to India at the river Ganges. That is a place that is very sacred to the Hindus, they travel here when they are dying with the hope to get their systems cremated and their ashes pass on in to the holy river. Otsu moves here to sacrifice himself so they can help these folks make the dying journey. He literally holds the visitors to the river that can barely walk.

Sacrifice is the emphasis of Otsu's beliefs. Jesus is the main symbol of sacrifice. He quit his life for mankind's sins. Jesus symbolically lugs all the anguishes of mankind on his shoulders when he's made to carry his own mix to fatality. Otsu imitates the carrying of suffering by plainly moving the deceased and dying on his back again to the River Ganges. Otsu perceives more than just the task he's doing, he seems something genuine and necessary in putting the anguish of others on his shoulders, by compromising himself. Mitsuko perceives what Otsu does as a waste materials of his own life, because he is getting nothing out of it in her sight. Otsu knows he'll not change the world or get rid of suffering, he's doing this act of sacrifice for the good of people, if there is a benefit that originates from after that it Otsu recognizes the act will never be the real good act of sacrifice.

By the finish of the story you learn to get the feeling that Mitsuko finally understands the opinion of sacrifice and love for others. She chooses to bathe in the holy river getting started with the Hindus with her own prayer, which she still is convinced is a lie, she still has that emptiness until she recognizes the best sacrifice.

Sacrifice is to provide and receive nothing in return except for delight in you. To love is to sacrifice; Otsu makes sacrifices for people trying to turn their sorrow into love. The end of the storyline brings the biggest sacrifice, when Otsu becomes mortally wounded, while conserving Sanjo, who is a person who most wouldn't sacrifice for because of his social insensitiveness. But because Otsu and his beliefs he saves the man and in the long run giving his life. This take action makes his sacrifice even greater, he is not sacrificing for a loved one or a member of family but also for a stranger who does not know or appreciate what Otsu will for him. Otsu has Christ-like, selfless love that increases above all ethnical, racial, and religious prejudices to embrace all of mankind, similar to the river Ganges, which he observed as a deep and moving river of love " recognizing all, rejecting neither the ugliest of men nor the filthiest" (185). That is whenever we finally understand what lies in the centre of Christianity; Love and sacrifice for others. Otsu's sacrifice is one of clean love for mankind, deaf, blind and dumb to how pointless it might be.
