None of this happens in Chronicle of the Death Foretold even as we learn of Santiagos death in the start itself so thus there is no suspense building up to his loss of life.

With respect to the individuals in both literature, Aschenbach is the the one that is more inspired by external incidents in the way that his actions are always a result of some external power for example when it appeared it was going to rain Aschenbach visit the cemetery for tone. Contradictory to Aschenbach, Santiago was not so affected by the external events.
