Hunger of Memory
Richard Rodriguez in chapter 2 of his publication "Hunger of Memory space" talks and analyses his own life. How from an early on age he arrived to comprehend the changes that happened inside him. He mainly identifies his activities in school, against the ones he previously at home.
Son of Mexican immigrants, Rodriguez was a working-class child. His parents experienced only received the basic education, so that as they battled for an improved life in the US, they came to understand its importance. They too once possessed dreams, that they left out, as the need to hide basic needs and daily tiredness, ended them from satisfying them and made them neglect. Naturally, they spent all their ambitions in their children. They urged and pressed them into learning and progressing as they knew a good education level was the key to a much better life.
The younger boy, Richard Rodriguez, was in some way not the same as his sibling and sisters. Very early on in his life he came up to realize the changes that education helped bring upon him. He found himself torn between two worlds: the main one of university and the main one of family life. He started to admire his instructors and look upon them, more than his parents. He desired their knowledge and expert. As he mentions in the reserve ". . . I started out by imitating their accents, using their dictions, trusting their every direction"1.
As a child he arrived to love catalogs and seek knowledge. Education for him was a choice. He chose to turn into a good scholar. His family track record became an obstacle. His parents never read a reserve, couldn't help him along with his research, wouldn't read him bedtime testimonies. His eagerness to learn was consistent. Trying to focus he isolated himself from his parents. He began to feel ashamed to them, their degree of education, their poverty, their accent, their occurrence. These feelings filled up him up with guilt. He attempts to keep his family life and educational life separated as their social differences are too strong to comply. Eventually the total amount is lost.
His academic achievements frequently bring him facing the same quotation "Your parents must be very pleased with you" 1. He hides his pity for the lack of education of his parents behind a giggle. He knows that they are pleased with him, but is certain they don't understand him.
As he carries on along with his education, communicating along with his parents becomes increasingly more difficult. They are attempting to get in touch with him, requesting him about his life, his school, but he locates no common words to express himself and hides his love for his academic accomplishments behind simple content about things they understand.
He isolates himself. In order to be more educated and gain appraises from his educators and professors he reads hundreds of books, he seek isolation to concentrate. He becomes hard on himself convinced that education cannot be interesting.
"An initial reason behind my success in the class was that I couldn't forger that schooling was changing me and separating me from the life I relished before learning to be a college student. " 1. After research he recognizes himself as what Richard Hoggart identifies in his publication "The uses of Literacy", a "scholarship boy". In such a term he sees himself a son, trying to emotionally minimize himself off his family in order to "can get on". He considers how lousy of a student he was, memorizing information, not thinking for himself but eagerly adopting the thoughts of others and especially those of his educators. He observed the scholarship guy that no classmate and even some instructors liked. He identifies the exaggeration in his eagerness for education.
Facing his dread to long for days gone by, he attempts to come back home and spends time with his parents. Still filled up with emotional uncertainty his come back home is a step of achieving back to his routes. Searching for that sense of owed he doesn't give attention to the distinctions that made him once feel ashamed of them, instead he starts knowing their similarities.
It does not take him long to understand that the changes that schooling brought after him are so deep, that his actions, wishes and thoughts are dictated by his educational background.
Beautifully given, Richard Rodriguez, captures the struggle of a kid and down the road adult to cut off from his family environment to be able to seek progression. The conflict between your psychological bonds with the family and the enjoyment of knowledge often makes children reject the expert of parents, considering less of these, idealizing educators and fills them with of feelings of pity and guilt. Not often even accepted, Rodriguez courageously recognizes himself as a "scholarship boy", that by the end of his educational job involves realize, that all that he's, all that he has done, no matter how hard he attempts to escape it, is the outcome of the changes that schooling brought on him.
It requires a lot of power and deepest knowledge of oneself, in order to be able to look back again and dig into the childhood. It is a fact that students are usually confused when they first go to school. They face a whole new world, with different rules and role models. Especially for the working course children, the social dissimilarities are so strong, that most children think it is hard to completely easily fit into schooling environment, ending up with the least education. Action and terms used at home, is usually the main one discouraged at school. In order to flourish in schooling the child is obligated to seek isolation and progressively cut off from the family. Going right through this painful method, children are occasionally able to balance these two different worlds of these life, sometimes they are not.
Education changes people, other more, others less. Yet the ones mostly damaged will be the ones that can understand and identify at that particular time that the change occurs. That is a freighting experience, especially for a child that still needs the psychological support from its family and yet is excited to explore all the opportunities of knowledge that are in advance.
