I Hear America Performing Walt Whitman English Literature Essay

The poem is symbolic of American nationalism. Whiteman is using performing as symbolic the does sound that working creates, therefore turning the tones of industry into music. The poem is a joyous representation of the many working people in the us and how they are going about their day, strong, happy, healthy and proficient at their careers. The theme of the poem is output or enjoyment in one's stop in life. The author describes a wide range of people on the jobs carpenters, technicians, masons, boatmen, shoemaker, woodcutter, moms, wives and young men. Each picture he represents of these people is their "blithe" and happy aspect of their place of life. He uses optimistic words "blithe", "carols", "strong", "delicious", "robust" and "friendly". The complete poem is a special event of life, a celebration of many various sorts of people that define what America is and exactly how they find pleasure in their everyday. Walt Whitman life experience inspired him to write the poem. He lived in the 19th century and in his poem he speaks of the activities which were taking place and the way the people reacted to them. He was both a carpenter and a farmer and therefore having witnessed life over a farm accompanied by city life he compiled the societal activities and attitudes which he published about in the e book.

The major poetic device employed in the poem is its managing metaphor. A metaphor is a number of speech where one thing is substituted for or used to identify another. This controlling metaphor has impacts, adjustments and unifies the whole poem. The manifestation "I hear America performing" substitutes "America" for "America people". The result of the metaphor is to identify both as well as the people who are depicted by the poem. This differentiation although is delicate is very important because the rest of the poem builds upon this metaphor by offering examples of the types of persons the loudspeaker considers quintessentially "American". "Singing", "song" and "carols" also provide as metaphors in the poem. "The confirmed carols" that the speaker hears suggest the uniqueness of the person singing them and they also become metaphors for personality.

The author has used personification. That is a figurative speech in which an inanimate subject or abstraction is given human being qualities or expertise. For example America is merely a name of the country so it can't sing but the poet say "America sings" and again America is not really a living thing. The poet has also used a lot of symbolism. For example when he expresses his awe at these Americans singing, he's making a statement about human greatness by revealing to the audience that human achievement is not is not assessed with what one does indeed, but instead by how one will go about doing it he inspires admiration for these people not by establishing outright that he considers they certainly great things but by giving simple, specific images of every one maintaining his or her own business and merging their individual careers with " singing" which we usually connect with cheerfulness and lightness of sprit. I can say that the poem impacts me since it provides ideas of how people go around with their daily business similar to the way I also do by daily activities. It remind me of how a few of my work mates are so happy or frustrated specially when chatting with friends during work as they share some of the difficult and good aspects of the work environment. I'll incorporate what I have learnt from the poem which is cheerful heart when working and also energetic participation at work. The poem has also inspired me to relax after the hard times work. It is because in line with the poem the freedom that all of such different types display in their work is remaining aside at the end of your day, when they come as a "party of young fellows".
