In The Time Of The Butterflies - Essay

Many years back, people believed that women did not have the right to communicate their ideas and emotions. These people thought that women were delivered just to get married and be mothers, and if indeed they considered heading to school these were often punished by culture. In those days, women weren't permitted to go to school or to have a job because they had to be in charge of the house. In the home, women had not only to care for their children but also that they had to gratify their husbands, care for the old and suffering members of the family and do the housework. Something very important that we have to consider is the fact that in those times the family members didn't have just a few children, but six or seven. This made it even more complicated on their behalf. Women of this time were discriminated against socially. They did not have the same opportunities as men. Women could not have important jobs, and if they had, they didn't have the same treatment and incomes as men. Women were the worst paid and the most exploited. Women possessed always a second role in the family and contemporary society.

Fortunately now, the situation has improved and society has established more privileges for the safeguard of the ladies. However, there are still some places where people continue steadily to hold the negative beliefs about keeping women always at home. Nowadays, women have rebelled against those who think they are just an object that are being sold and sold. Many of them are not fearful to fight for their rights any more, they are now allowed to do everything they need; they can work, they can exhibit their views, they can go to school, and they can even vote and have important jobs inside our society. Inside our new contemporary society, women can have as important jobs as men. For example, in Germany, the individuals have a female as chief executive because now contemporary society helps them and believes in them.

In this paper, the two reviews that I am going to analyse are In The Time of the Butterflies written by Julia Alvarez and The Color Purple written by Alice Walker. My essay will concentrate on the role of the primary ladies in each tale. Celie, Nettie, Sofia and the Mirabal sisters. The reason why I made a decision to discuss this topic is basically because even though I am a guy, I believe women should receive the same treatment and opportunities as us, men. And also because it is very important to know that ladies come with an important and essential role not only at home but also in labour lives.

In ENOUGH TIME of the Butterflies is a tale that discusses the lives of the Mirabal family, especially of the Mirabal sisters. This account takes place in the Dominican Republic where each Mirabal sister narrates the story according to her point of view. The Mirabal sisters called Patria, Minerva, Ded and Maria Teresa. These women were involved in a motion against Trujillo, who at that time governed the Dominican Republic. This man was an oppressor and he governed the country in a brutal and cruel way. This motion against Trujillo shows the Mirabal sisters as strong women, women who fought for his or her protection under the law and who gave their lives in order to get the treatment any girl deserved.

On the other hand, The Color Crimson is a story about assault, oppression and discrimination against women. Celie, a little black female, is raped by her stepfather often. She acquired two infants by him. Celie obtains discrimination from white people, who treat black people as family pets or, at best, as servants. Celie is given to Mr Dark colored by her stepfather. Mr Dark colored forces Celie to own sexual relationships with him. He is better than her. The infants Celie has had from her stepfather have been recinded from her. Celie is just fourteen years old, but she's now to take care of Mr Black's children. Celie knows nothing about love because she's never experienced that sense. She's just received beating and oppression from everyone. Mr Black color has a child, Harpo, who marries to Sofia. Harpo humiliates and visits Sofia. But he gets an enormous surprise; Sofia will not allow it. Sofia is a strong and independent woman who fights for her privileges. Nettie, Celieґs sister, is discriminated against as well.

As we see, these two stories have a lot of things in keeping, and one of the main is the role that ladies play in each book. In The Time of the Butterflies, the Mirabal sisters grew up in an top class because their daddy was a entrepreneur. The Mirabal sisters were very close and they were expected to get married and also to have babies, that is certainly what they did. The Mirabal sisters supported each other in any decision they made. Here we will get an obvious similarity with THE COLOUR Purple; it is because in this novel the sisters Celie and Nettie were always very close as well. Even though these sisters were separated from one another, they were along their thoughts. Another similarity between these two stories is the fact in both books women have very traditional jobs. For instance, in The Color Crimson when Celie is taken up to Mr Black coloredґs house, she's to care for the children, do the housework and satisfy Mr Black. She has to do everything Mr Black color wishes; she was even forced to have sexual relations. Celie was strike by Mr Dark and she received a terrible treatment. Even though Celie was just fourteen yrs. old Mr Black did not allow her to attend school. Women in those days were expected to get married and become mothers and heading to school did not make any sense by any means. It really is another similarity with In The Time of the Butterflies, people also thought that women should stay at home with the kids.

A clear difference between these women is the fact that in The Color Crimson Celie, the protagonist of the book, and her sister Nettie, did not have the ability of attending university. They were poor plus they didn't have someone who could support them. Alternatively, In The Time of the Butterflies, the Mirabal sisters, Patria, Ded, Maria Teresa and Minerva acquired the possibility to research because their daddy, Don Enrique Mirabal, received enough money to send them to university. However, these sisters suffered too, however in a different way. The Mirabal sisters experienced because of Trujillo. Trujillo was the government of Dominican Republic in those days. He was an oppressor and his dictatorship was brutal. Trujillo used to take care of women as objects, he might have any woman he sought because he had the energy. Here, we have another similarity with The Color Crimson, in this novel Mr Black was an oppressor and a dictator too. He makes Celie to do things she did not want to do. However, Celie was required to obey him, and she did not have the possibility to say what she really thought. Mr Black color acquired Celie as a servant in his house while he spent time with Shug Avery, a woman who Mr. Dark colored loved. That's why Trujillo and Mr Black color have many things in keeping. Both were "machinists".

In THE COLOUR Purple we've Sofia, identity who for me is the most powerful girl in the novel. Sofia wedded Harpo, Mr. African americanґs son. Harpo wants to treat Sofia, his better half; of the same manner, his father snacks Celie. However, Sofia is an extremely intelligent girl and she does not allow it. On the other hand, Sofia can take control of the home and she does not allow herself to be insulted by anybody. She confronts even the white community, this community cured blacks as family pets, but Sofia rebelled against that and she fought for her freedom. However, she was taken to prison because she hits and insults an essential white man in the town. The similarity with In ENOUGH TIME of the Butterflies is the fact Sofia has the same courage that Minerva, one of the Mirabal sisters. For me, Minerva was also the bravest and most powerful woman in this novel. I think both of these women are similar. They have got the same purpose in struggling; they wanted freedom for themselves and for their families. Both of these women did not really care if they lost their liberty to be able to get their battles. Minerva Mirabal gave her life to be able to have a much better country and Sofia, from The Color Purple, lost her freedom to be able to get a better treatment on her behalf family and for the dark community.

Another similarity I found is that in each book there is certainly one woman who narrates or explains to her tale through writings. For example, in In ENOUGH TIME of the Butterflies Ded narrates her story through a diary, in which she wrote all those things took place to her. Alternatively, In The Color Purple Celie tells her account through characters to God. In these documents, Celi and DedЁ could write almost all their thought and all those things they cannot say before people. In these papers, they portrayed all they thought. And I could say these papers were just like a person they could speak to.

In conclusion, I can say these two reports made me think about the life I want for my daughters in a future. In these novels there is much tragedy however they showed me the worthiness people should share with the women. I personally believe all women need to have the same opportunities. The world should not separate between black and white women, because they are all equals. Consequently, they have to be treated in the same manner as the world treats men. Women have the same and much more capacity as men and sometimes they are simply more powerful. Women have the power to sacrifice her life in order to save their family members not matter what. The difference between genders is just an obstacle created by the individuals mind.
