Looking ON THE Hunger Games AN EVALUATION English Books Essay

Many writers starting their stories on the myth or event from days gone by. As we are studying european civilization, it comes natural for me to choose a film based in part over a myth from old Greece and entertainment in Rome. I say in part as there were also newer inspirations which also added to the film. I chose to write a newspaper on the film The Appetite Games. My objective is to indicate the similarities between the Greek myth Theseus and the Minotaur, the predominantly Roman gladiator games plus some Roman similarities. I say mainly Roman as gladiators were also present in other societies. I am going to also discuss whether or not the cultural references were clear or not. It's important since it shows how common myths, stories and history inspire modern freelance writers and movie companies.

The film is based on a book written by Suzanne Collins. The movie was directed by Gary Ross and made by Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik. The screen play was written by Gary Ross, Suzanne Collins, and Billy Ray. Its main stars are Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark), Liam Hemsworth (Gale Hawthorne), Woody Harrelson (Haymitch Abernathy), Elizabeth Lenders (Effie Trinket), and Donald Sutherland (Leader Coriolanus Snow).

The movie occurs in a post-apocalyptic contemporary society where thirteen districts rebelled against its capital Panem. At the end of the nuclear war the capital had won with region 13 being

totally destroyed. Twelve districts remained. As retribution for the districts' defiance against Panem a competition was to be presented one per year when a male and a lady age group 12-18 must be decided on from each one of the 12 poorer districts. They must fight each other to the fatality until you can find one survivor. That survivor and their region gain fame and prosperity usually by means of food. These games are broadcasted over tv and the population is either required to watch in the case of the districts or voluntary as in the case of the capitals populace.

All of the districts are not evenly poor. Neither are they equally poor within an area. This creates an inequality as titles are came into in a lottery (called a reaping your day of the pulling) The rules are starting at get older twelve your name is inserted once the first year, double the next, with an additional entry each year thereafter until they transform 18, the last year they meet the criteria for the reaping. In addition, they have the option to acquire their name added more times in exchange for a tessera, which is a year's way to obtain grain and oil for one person, and they can do this for each relative in their home, with the entries being cumulative. This definitely puts the chances in the favor of those people that are richer to begin with.

Characters: Katniss is the narrator and heroin of the movie, Peeta a guy whose family were bakers intentionally burnt a loaf of breads and threw it outside one day when he recognized Katniss was outside and starving. He was also the other tribute to the appetite games.

A few ideas led to the development of the storyplot. One was the Greek misconception Theseus and the Minotaur. The story goes, Androgeus, who was the child of ruler Minos of Crete was killed by the

Athenians at the Pan-Athenian game titles in Athens. As a result Ruler Minos sailed to Athens and demanded his son's assassins from King Aegeus. King Aegeus didn't know who killed Androgeus so he sacrificed the whole town. The agreement was to send seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian females as tribute to Crete to be consumed by the Minotaur living in a Labyrinth. The

time frame every year, seven years or nine years is not clear. Theseus volunteers to visit in place of one of the son tributes to slay the minotaur. The evaluation to The Food cravings Video games is the districts are obligated to send two tributes to the video games as punishment for rebellion against the administrative centre. Another comparison is when Katliss volunteers to look in place of her sister when she actually is determined at the reaping.

The Romans shaped conquered areas into provinces which were manipulated by governors and got troops to keep up control over the enslaved society. This compares with the conquered districts within the Hunger Games which were policed by "peacekeepers". Another mention of Roman times is in relation to the Roman saying panem et circenses (bakery and circuses) coined by a roman satirist named Juvenal. It related to how the Roman rulers used grain and the colosium (gladiators) mass happenings to get crowds to appease the conquered people's subserviency. This compares with the administrative centre city within the Hunger Video games being named Panem and the circuses relating to the games organised within an outdoor area. Also large crowds of people watched and were captived by the getting rid of and bloodstream in both the roman colleseum along with the Hunger Video games.

Both the being hungry game titles and Roman gladiator video games show the inurement that can derive from the broadcasting or taking a look at of this gore over and over. A sense of separation from fact may get over those visitors not mixed up in games. I would postulate that within the districts feelings were not shared.

Many of the people names have also come from Roman times.

Katniss Everdeen: The heroine of the trilogy has what seems, initially, just like a not-so-heroic moniker. (Her best ally, Gale, calling her Catnip. ) But her name is one of the few that gets a conclusion: In the flashback, her father-who is already useless when the reserve begins-tells her that "as long as you can find yourself, you may never starve. " The katniss herb has nourishing origins, and is also called "arrowhead. " It belongs to the genus Sagittaria, and the constellation of the same name, Sagittarius, is also known as the archer-a fitting ode to her impressive bow-and-arrow skills.

Gale Hawthorne: Katniss' best friend's stocks his name with a strong wind-but some fansites suggest that it's actually derived from the Old English word gaile, indicating jovial. This seems unlikely; Gale is not actually the jovial type. Like a strong wind, however, the usually absent, brooding Gale is scarcely noticeable, though his occurrence can have dramatic effects.

Peeta Mellark: I haven't seen any convincing interpretations for Katniss' fellow District tribute. Given that he comes from a family group of breads bakers, however, Peeta may simply be an

alternate-dystopic, if you will-spelling of pita. (The humble Peeta also stands in contrast to the grandiose Panem, which, as mentioned above, is Latin for bread. )

Haymitch Abernathy: Ralph Abernathy was a leader in the Civil Rights movement, and is also a fitted namesake for the brand new Haymitch. But how about that crazy first name? I've no idea.

Effie Trinket: The escort for the Area 12 tributes has mostly of the names presently circulating (if minimally) in the baby-name pool. Effie is brief for the Greek name Euphemia, signifying well-spoken, which will fit well enough-though the Greek for well-dressed might suit her better. Her last name does indeed nod to her outfit: It represents a small/cheap ornament, something Elizabeth Banking institutions' costume custom made has down to a T.

Rue: Essentially the most beloved of the non-District 12 tributes also offers a plant-based name: The rue is known as the herb-of-grace and it is often used for its medicinal properties. But you probably know it better as meaning pity or regret (as with "you will rue your day"), something the individuals who get rid of her will surely feel, once Katniss is performed with them.

Seneca Crane: In addition to possessing the world's best undesired facial hair, Seneca Crane gets the distinguished title of Head Game Get better at. While he stocks his name with a Native American tribe now surviving in New York and Ontario, Collins was likely discussing the Roman philosopher, who was simply forced to commit suicide when accused of conspiracy. The philosopher's destiny tips at Crane's own.

Cinna: Katniss's stylist doesn't have a final name, but he stocks his first name with a fellow musician: the poet in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar-who was recognised incorrectly as another Cinna, a

politician who helped eliminate Caesar. The poet Cinna was subsequently killed by a mob, which foreshadows what goes on to Katniss's stylist. Sorry, Lenny Kravitz followers.

Claudius Templesmith: The game titles announcer stocks his name with the Roman emperor Claudius, whose own name originates from the Latin claudus, indicating lame. Inside the Roman's circumstance,

it's a reference to his physical deformity, but the modern, colloquial meaning of "lame" seems more fitting for Mr. Templesmith.

Coriolanus Snow: The evil president is named for another Roman, person who was immortalized in the Shakespeare play with the same name. Shakespeare's Coriolanus supported the power of aristocrats over the normal people. Been there as well.

In conclusion I would state The Being hungry Games is only one example of ancient Greek and/or Roman common myths or truths which have inspired writers to come up with a modern version in their own interpretation. I would also state as with any form of skill numerous interpretations may occur after the reality. Only the writer really has learned what influenced them. It is strange however that lots of different ideas can seem to fit or can logically explain a decision whether or not it was at first conceived.
