Summary Of The Mrs Dalloway Book English Books Essay

Virginia Woolf is one of the brightest freelance writers of modernity. Her works aren't only unique; they are also psychological, philosophical and incredibly difficult to understand. Her works are usually cured as experimental subconscious novels. It is sure to state that you of her brightest novels "Mrs Dalloway" is just about the most difficult one. It is not easy to interpret it at all. It's very difficult to investigate its structure (style, genre, rhythm) and the peculiarities of its content (theme, plot, conflict, character types, idea). Using the main approach of her woks - the blast of consciousness, Virginia Woolf will try to imprint the process of thinking of her characters, to replicate their slightest emotions, thoughts, feelings. It stands to reason that the writer is not enthusiastic about real life. What she is actually interested in is the interpretation of real life in the consciousness and subconsciousness. She dismisses real life with its problems and leaves for a much better world, an environment of feelings and mental experience, rich associations and changeable senses. Virginia Woolf makes a audience enter the character's internal world, but not study the reason why that made the type do in this or that way. That reason ends up with the impressionistic manner of image and style: there is absolutely no clear form, however the word abounds in fragmentary details and features.

The plot of the novel "Mrs Dalloway" seems rather poor at the first look. The whole novel describes 1 day of August 1923 from the life span of two main character types - a romantic London woman Clarissa Dalloway, who goes to a flower shop each day to buy blooms for the nighttime, and a humble clerk Septimus Smith - a contused veteran of the First World War. They live near by, but never knew each other rather than met.

The report of Septimus Smith is one of the very most dramatic ones in the book. He belongs to the lost era. Virginia Woolf had not been the first someone to reveal those unlucky people. Their life was explained by Hemingway, Remark and many other authors. Septimus Smith was main volunteers who visited protect his motherland. He didn't die, but what is worse, his heart and soul perished. He didn't know very well what to do after the warfare. His great desire was to become a man of literature, but he was destined to be an ordinary clerk. When Septimus Smith saw the fatality of his good friend at the war, he became aware that there have been some problems with his mental health - he remained indifferent to his friend's fatality. His psyche secured his internal world this way. His life in London becomes a problem: he cannot feel; he has no emotions. Virginia Woolf shows the vast range of the results of the World Warfare. That's not the miserable life of 1 person however the tragedy of the complete generation of men and women with no future.

The persona of Septimus Smith is known as to be the two times of Clarissa Dalloway. Virginia Woolf herself stated that Clarissa and Septimus are two attributes of 1 personality; they may be spiritual mates. The bond between their personas is rather clear. Each day Clarissa thought that something had to be done with her life. Her parents only provided the life span to her, brought her into this world. But she's to have, to suffer, to go to the very end. She actually is afraid of that life. If she did not have a partner she'd probable spend her life seated like a parrot over a perch and making no movements. But she has to pretend that she enjoys her life, she's to entertain all their guests and wait for the death as deliverance. Clarissa Dalloway treats the death of a man she reads about in a papers as a heroic deed. He was brave to leave the world of sorrow, but she is kept with her grieves. Thereby the suicide of Septimus Smith becomes the symbolic death of Clarissa Dalloway, the liberation from her former. Having felt the affinity of souls with the son, the senselessness and absurdity of presence, Mrs. Dalloway is constantly on the live. She seems the joy of life when sunlight rises and places. She realizes the pleasure to hold back for the next new day.

The proven fact that Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Smith are two factors of one personality can be proven by yet another fact. Both of these have three places that mix the same feelings: "the large space", "the place of communication", "the private place". London is "the top place" for both: Septimus and Clarissa. In the pavements of London they both feel something that resembles agoraphobia - the terror of the huge world that conceals the threat of death. The landscape of the town acquires the top features of eternal and posthumous world. Witnessing the branches of trees and shrubs Clarissa thinks about the times after her death and realizes these branches won't change. Septimus also perceives his loss of life in trees and shrubs whose branches are full with life and energy. "The area of communication" - where all social connections take place mix in the same emotions: the impossibility of communication with other people. Clarissa's place of communication is her parlor. She has to meet different people there; he has to entertain them, though she will not want it quite definitely. The unforeseen visit of Peter Walsh makes her feel very uneasy. He attempts to have a heart-to-heart talk with Clarissa, but the conversation is converted into an empty conversation. Septimus' "place of communication" is the case of his psychiatrist. But he cannot find consolation there; nobody can help him. Smith cannot understand why he needs that, he cannot stand all the people that collect around him and demand something that Septimus cannot understand. Their "private places" is the only place where the people can be themselves. They stay with their emotions, thoughts, and anxieties. They don't fear the external world only when they are by itself. They find retirement life and desired solitude. They don't have the terror of the huge world; they don't lose themselves in the closure with their "private places". Regrettably these top secret places of retirement living are parts of the earth. The hostile world desires to soak up their only sanctuary and make sure they are, Clarissa and Septimus, participate in the crowd. Both of these make a protest against that. But everyone has his own get away from the problem: Septimus Smith chooses suicide and Clarissa comes back to her friends.
