Langston Hughes article "The Negro Artist and the Racial Hill"

In 1926, Langston Hughes had written an essay The Negro Artist and the Racial Hill. In his article, Hughes presents a predicament where the African Americans believed inferior in their status dark people and their culture and strove to embrace the culture of the whites. He does this by use of the DARK-COLORED poet who observed it good to be a white poet. During this time period, the White people despised and looked down on the dark-colored people. Therefore, the blacks understood that it was easier to be a white man or a white article writer.

The Negro poet advised that he liked to be a white writer, meaning that he wanted to be a white man (Hughes, Para. 1). Corresponding to Hughes, this was "the mountain status in the way of any true Negro artwork in America-this desire within the contest towards whiteness, the desire to pour racial individuality in to the mold of North american standardization, and be a little Negro and since much American as possible. " (Hughes, Para. 1).

Hughes also examines the status of the African American families of that time. The blacks made their children believe that the whites were superior. They compelled their children to emulate the whites and try to be like them in all respects. Any child who tried to behave just like a black man received a severe abuse with the. The blacks were identified through all means to keep away their culture of their own children (Amada, para. 2). The parents made their children see white as a symbol of virtue and success. This upbringing affected the lives of the children up with their adulthood because their parents made these to believe that to become part of the bigger society and become successful that they had to work as whites.

The essay also talks about the difference between the upper class and middle income African People in america. Hughes claims that the way the two categories acted made them different, rather than their financial differences. They thought that they might climb higher in contemporary society based on the level they acted as white people in contemporary society.

Hughes published in criticism of the Negro poet who, in his writing wanted to be considered a white man (Kelley, 126). He demonstrated how the middle income and upper category African Americans tried out to imitate the lifestyle and culture of the white men. The dark-colored Americans does this by shunning their Negro theatres, preventing the Negro spiritual music, reading mags of the whites and marrying light shaded ladies in order to allow them to look like the whites. These classes of the blacks also tried out to limit the Negro poets and authors on what these were likely to write. These high class African Americans acquired began alienating themselves from the other black community. This school struggles to obtain respect in population even at the expense of sacrificing their racial personal information. These people were ashamed of their color as dark-colored people and didn't want to see their own beauty. That is why they emulated the white people in appearance, in dressing doing his thing and in the way they conducted their worship services.

Hughes also speaks about those African American artists who have been true with their culture. They organised faithfully to their culture, a thing that made all of those other people to alienate them. This community of those who held with their culture survived well and their work is one of the very most celebrated today.

The goal of Hughes' article was to elevate the beauty of the African People in the usa' language and standards of living to the nationwide literary level. He prompted the Negro Artists to accept their own race and not to show from it. Hughes also advised that any copy writer who needed his artwork to appear to be or involve some aspect of "whiteness" was not being true to himself or herself (Floyd-Miller, Para 4). The African People in america had place for themselves criteria and strove to meet these expectations to be able to look like or live like the white Americans. Hughes' goal, therefore, was to encourage the dark artists to create hurdles to these benchmarks by use with their relevant, significant and original work to be able to change the belief the blacks got that whites were superior. This artwork was to serve the goal of changing the black's desire of attempting to be white to that of accepting that they were Negros and Beautiful. Hughes creates that to his head, "it's the duty of the younger Negro designer, if he accepts any duties in any way from outsiders, to improve through the drive of his fine art that old whispering 'I want to be white, ' covered in the aspirations of his people, to 'why must i want to be white? I am a Negro--and beautiful!" (Hughes, Para. 12)

Up to the 1960s, the American white community still despised the American black community. They never loved the work of most African Americans like poets and freelance writers. However, this transformed as the whites started out taking involvement in the black people's artwork. The whites frequented the dark people's community to take pleasure from their performances. Currently, this matter of discrimination of literary work has ceased and many of the black Americans' literary work is celebrated today.

Hughes suggests that he has assurance in lower classes of the African People in the usa. He observed them to be free from the issues of self-esteem and that they were comfortable and satisfied in their nature as blacks. He noticed this category of blacks as a way to obtain inspiration using their artistic talents. Their struggle had not been to appear reputable to the white visitors thus resisted the pressure and wrote on the designs they experienced were relevant in expressing themselves against the actual whites desired. This portrays the powerful imaginative tool or tool the lower class dark-colored Africans have.

According to Amada (Para. 3), although much has transformed in the manner the white Americans view the African Americans, the black community is still not fully accepted. There is still some racial discrimination in some towns of america of America. However, the black People in america have made large improvements socially, politically and economically.

In realization, Hughes' essay can help us to learn the way the African Americans related with themselves and with the whites in their population. It shows us the way the white Americans searched down on the black Americans. We understand how the middle class and upper category African People in america yearned to de like the whites and their struggle to achieve this. It also shows how the lower class dark people faced discrimination from the whites as well as the well off African Americans. The article further shows the way the black poets and writers managed to defeat the white's pressure to write on the designs that they wished while ignoring others. This caused positive changes in america of America. The conviction of the Negros helped the blacks to get some level of acceptance in the American community. The whites finally accepted the literary work of the blacks including their poems, sounds and books. With the switch of things, there may be hope that things will be improving until we get a united community by the end.
