The role of bioethics in the humanization of medicine
Bioethics as an academic discipline and social institution conducts extensive work on combating negative trends in modern medicine and protecting the humanitarian values of medical activities. This work is done in many ways.
1. From the very beginning of the development of bioethics, it, in accordance with the fundamental ideas of RV Potter, is called to serve as a bridge between special (medical and related) knowledge and humanitarian values. Of particular importance is the experience of interdisciplinary activity accumulated in bioethics, which is so important in our era of narrow specialization.
2. Bioethics is a unique project for organizing a dialogue between various stakeholders. Bioethics acts as a forum, a platform for open discussion of the moral problems of medicine and efforts to rationally and equitably resolve them.
3. Bioethics is also a practice of moral reasoning, which is very important for a modern, dynamically changing world. As professional philosophers admit, in many respects it was bioethics that stimulated a revival of interest in ethics, a practically little interesting direction of classical philosophical thought in modern society. In bioethics there is a constant search for new forms, theories, models, styles of argumentation.
In this regard, bioethics can serve as an example for other branches of social activity, in which moral problems are growing (for example, in politics, engineering, business, mass media, etc.), and where an ethical component is also required.
4. The fundamental contribution of bioethics to the humanization of medicine is also in the development of the most important ethical documents that exert a profound influence on medical science and practice. Ethical documents of the national and international level have largely contributed to the development of more qualitative medical activities (practical and research) in terms of humanitarian values.
5. Bioethics also performs an extremely important critical function: it publicly criticizes negative trends in the health system; including she pays much attention to criticizing the trends of dehumanization.
6. Bioethics is also a practice of advocacy in a broad sense. This practice protects the best interests of patients, special groups, society as a whole, as well as bio-objects with moral status. It can even be said that bioethics is the protection of the true values of life as such, which is already reflected in the term "bioethics".
7. Bioethics conducts constant humanitarian and educational activities in relation to the medical community, as well as other specialists in related specialties, various interest groups and the general public.
It is highly desirable to involve the medical community more in bioethical activity, to obtain deeper knowledge and skills in the field of bioethics. It is medical professionals who can and must play a crucial role in protecting the traditional values of medicine. Still Hippocrates said: "Omnium profecto artium metlicina nobilissima (Of all sciences medicine, of course, is the most noble)." This is the highest moral reference point and the social ideal of the medical profession.
