Local transportation, Provision of vehicles at the disposal...

Local transport

In the vast majority of cases, local transportation is carried out by road. A characteristic technological sign of local transportation is the possibility of completing a complete transport cycle - one turn or a round trip - during a change (day).

The largest role in transport logistics is played by local transportation, which is carried out in the service area of transport terminals or other large cargo-carrying facilities - logistic centers, warehouses, other enterprises connected by constant cargo flows with the senders or recipients of the adjacent region. Such transportation (local cartage, pre-on-canay, last mile carriage) is often the final link in transportation in the supply chain.

Local transportation is a special type of activity with its own principles of organization. They are characterized by a variety of management tasks, the complexity of their theoretical formulation and the variability of operational conditions. "Where supply-and-dispatch begins, supply chain management ends" - this common statement is based on the fact that the delivery and delivery operations are carried out, as a rule, on urban or suburban street-roads networks, where the efficiency of transportation depends largely on external uncontrollable factors.

Provision of vehicles at the disposal of the client

This type of service is available in all modes of transport and is designed primarily for those customers who would like to have at their disposal vehicles, but do not have the appropriate investment opportunities and are not ready to perform the technical operation functions, which also requires investment and hiring of qualified personnel.

The corresponding services vary in a very wide range - from providing a truck with a driver for rent for several hours before leasing a fleet of hundreds of freight cars with the provision of their repair and maintenance, replacing dropping cars, feeding to loading points, etc.

A common feature of this type of service is the lack of obligations of the owner of vehicles for the delivery of goods.

Terminal Services

Separation of terminal business and terminal services occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. in the course of deepening the specialization of transport operators and developing the activities of freight forwarders and logistics providers.

Terminal services can be divided into two main groups:

- services related to cargo: loading and unloading from vehicles and containers, packing and unloading of transport and cargo units, temporary storage in open spaces and warehouses of various types, consolidation and deconsolidation of consignments, packaging, repacking and marking of goods , weighing of cargoes, formation of transport packages, preparation for transportation of large and heavy cargoes, survey services, tallyman services, etc .;

services related to vehicles and equipment: provision of berths, tracks, ramps and various cargo handling equipment for performing cargo operations, weighing cars and wagons, providing parking spaces for vehicles, cleaning and washing vehicles and containers, small repair of transport equipment, etc.

In addition to the above, modern terminal operators can provide other services, including transportation services, for example, in the area of transportation and delivery in the terminal zone.

Additional services (value-added services) are provided by transport operators to improve their competitiveness.

The set of additional services for each transport company is purely individual and depends on the nature of its core business, market position, specific customer requests and other factors.

Additional services can be:

- a kind of basic services of the operator. Thus, a company that performs intercity freight transport can offer, as an additional service, the delivery of fragile or valuable cargo with their transport packaging and escort to the recipient's door;

- an addition to the basic services of the operator, for example, the implementation of the delivery of goods at the terminals of the company that performs rail transportation of consignments.

Some companies apply the concept of additional service to situations in which other operators use surcharges to tariffs or charge penalties from their customers - for example, when vehicles or containers are delayed by the customer in excess of the standard time. This approach should be seen as a manifestation of "positive marketing".
