There were very only few hotels and family run restaurants that offered only very few local traditional foods such as "Mititei and Ciorba". "Mititei is grilled meat balls (mini sausages) that are produced from minced meat; beef, pork, and mutton with garlic, black pepper, savory paprika and other spices, while "Ciorba is soup manufactured from chicken and style sour, served wih loaf of bread". Under the Communist dictatorship that was overthrown in 1989, western-style junk food franchises restaurants and hotels were not allowed. Within the years that used, the country was so poor to rehabilitate the inadequately maintained infrastructures. Adding to these problems was the actual fact that the properties in Bucharest were developed solely for residential use rather than for commercial purposes. [2 & 5]

By the middle-1990s, McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken breast restaurants were proven in Bucharest offering varieties of western junk food at affordable prices. It was a great colourful view to see people eating out in a more peaceful and comfortable environment different from the authoritarian limitations imposed through the communist period.

Under tight guidelines and rules set by the government, restaurants and hotels were awarded licences and necessary to maintain high food criteria, hygiene, facilities, personnels and wages relative to western benchmarks. Some of the popular restaurants and cafs in Bucharest are Gara Lipscani, Cafe Royal, Capriccio Italiano, Caru' Cu Bere, Trattoria del Tatoli, Waterloo, Ma'dam Zoronn, Paparazzi, Brasseir Crown Plaza, La Mama, Cina restaurant, Bistro Atheneu, Casa Vernescu, Burebista, Bradet, Aquarium, Capsa etc. The town is also home to numerous international fast food chains such as McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Poultry, Pizza Hut, Burger Ruler etc. Most pubs have limited food such as pastry and sandwich. Romanian restaurant and cafs prefer to find in metropolis centers where there tend to be more tourists, transport, security, convenience and availability. They are mainly secluded in place near to the Piata Romana, Piata Victoriei and Piata Unirii.
