The term pleasure and happy have been exposed in the books of the moral Viewpoint. Almost everyone feels that joy is one of the main goals, if not the supreme goal, of life. We tend to think of delight as a sense whereas for some Greeks it was more of circumstances of well-being or good fortune. Epicureanism and Stoicism will be the two functional philosophies whose aim is not simple to establish what is true then to reside wisely and gladly.

For Stoicism happiness is "the amount of most good" a strength sufficient for those living well; fulfillment in an accordance with virtue; a living being's sufficient profit. They further believe man has the abilities to get this done.

The notion of happiness for Epicurean is friends, flexibility and an analyzed life. He says that it's our in capacity to see why is us happy and we look for enjoyment in the wrong places.

I have chosen this subject matter because I want to know the real meaning of enjoyment which most of us have no idea. In this assignment I am explaining the perspective on happiness regarding to Stoic and Epicurean and the differences and assessment between their ideas. Then I would conclude with my personal assessment.

2. 0 What's happiness?

"Contentment is an over-all well-being in individuals life, an very important to many people and a substantial issue for theories in normative ethics. Aristotle disagreed with recognition of enjoyment with physical pleasure defended by Aristippus and other hedonists. Most utilitarian's accept this identification, but emphasize the value of taking into consideration the greatest happiness of everyone rather than just one's own".

Whatever, happy means at least it is thinkable to be happy in several notches one man can be happier than another and twelve months of your respective life can be happier than various other year. We realize that a point out of being disappointed or to one of any different tag of enjoyment. Happy is sometimes used with prepositions such as about, with, with. Clearly a person can be happy when he is unhappy with solid things, although we'd not say that a man was happy if he weren't happy with anything in his life. Different to what has sometimes been encouraged a person can be happy even though he does not have anything he needs but John Stuart Mill was right in telling that fulfillment of certain needs is needed for joy.

The second factor of contentment is the existence of certain sensation or reactions. Enjoyment is sometimes said to be a tastes of pleasure in look to one's total situation. And clearly we can say that a person is happy even if a guy he's not feeling delight at good treasure all the time. But if a man is happy, he'll not be subject to sadness, fret, restiveness, unhappiness, opposition and disgrace, for these feelings won't happen if he desires the total design of his life in so far as the parts he thinks incapable come to mind.

3. 0 An Epicurean perspective on happiness

Epicurus is one of the great ancient Greek philosophers, who provided a lot group of directions to enjoyment. Friends, Independence and meaningful life are his notion of joy. He says that it's our in competence to see why is us happy and we look for contentment in the incorrect places. He meant it the encounters of dynamics that pleasure or enjoyment was the goal and consummation of living. It did not follow out of this that enjoyment was a natural right of man; pleasure was alternatively an award which it the part of intelligence was to try after with prudence and attentiveness.

Epicurus powerfully presumed that every one has the ability to achieve real delight. The sole difficult would be that people tend to look for this in all the wrong places. He said that our need to be happy also to enjoy life should not get right up any sense of mistake. Life is given us to be happy, so that it must be lived fully. This is the most significant mistake people make, corresponding to Epicurus, is that folks have the idea of enjoyment with having lots of money also he said that pleasure is most essential part of life. We are able to likewise have meek and affordable life through simple clothes, simple home, normal water then wine beverage and having normal meal. The essential idea in his philosophy is that we are powerless to understand what can make us happy? We could therefore very much fascinated to materials things somewhat than spiritual things. We shop for worthless things, mislead by advertising. Thus we change our real needs with things such as clothes, vehicles, nice house, furniture and many others. But as this Greek philosophers like Epicurus tried to prove that people need only three things to be happy. They are Friends, Independence and analyzed life.

Epicurus respected companionship very much. Companionship dances across the world, announcing to us all to awaken and acknowledge one another. Additionally it is necessary to plan for haven by carefully and clinically nurturing camaraderie. "That man has best achieved the sensation of anxiety from the environment that has made interactions friendly whenever we can; where this was difficult, at least not UN friendly; where not even this possible, has avoided contacts, and wherever it was gainful to take action, has required imperial cover. " When Epicurus was 35 years old he bought a new house and invited some of his friends to reside as well as him. He told that friends are an important factor for joy. Whenever we feel sad, whenever we eat and walk we need friends for have a discussion. Epicurus said that we shouldn't eat anything only but we have to eat a straightforward meal with a special friend. The Epicureans duethat a friendly relationship cannot be parted from pleasure, similar to the virtues, which has been chatted. Isolation and life without friends are filled with unseen methods and anxieties, reason itself counsels us to protect friendship; when these are gained our spirits are recognized and can't be divided from the wish to getting pleasures.

Freedom means the secondary element of enjoyment to pause free from the restless life of Athens. He and his friends prepared to go to across the world and lead a straightforward life. To Epicurus the simple life designed for satisfaction with little and this was called self-reliance, which meant liberty: "Of self-sufficiency the most precious berry is freedom".

On the topic of freedom and goals the scholar of Epicureanism must be equipped for wonders. In the first place, it'll be amazing to notice that Epicurus was at believe it or not pain to stress the independence of man. I want friends because they're useful for me personally. So if, as Epicurus contains, pleasure is our complete last end, and we also need real friendships, then were forced to his finish. Even in addition to the uncertain position of genuine self-concern in overall Epicurean theory, there are complaints that may be raised to the reason of a friendly relationship. Furthermore, we can see from Epicurean exercise that they banned some socially recognized forms of relationship. There remains a certain tension, however, considering that Epicureans invoked famous loving friendship in the first place and especially given Epicurus declare that the wise person will like his friend equally with himself.

Finally, he spoke about an analyzed life. We need to be happy which expected take your time and effort to believe and echo our worries. Epicurus said that our worries may decreases simply by inspecting them meticulously and sensibly. In this respect, you can take here the Religious stand point on problems and thinking the god to provide us with all the needed goods for our day to day life. Though he lived prior to the attendance of Christianity, Epicurus appears to agree that we should get position to religious matters rather than a material one in order to be amazingly happy.

4. 0 Stoic point of view on happiness

According to stoic philosophers the thesis that virtue is enough for pleasure, we find the study that quality is self-sufficient for contentment. But how is virtue alone sufficient for happiness? For this we are in need of the special Stoic idea that only virtue is proficient at all, because the other well known things should be called bad but indifferent, creating a value of different kind. The idea of help that the Stoics are employing this is a totally objective one, and this only to be likely, since they are describing a completely objective notion good. The traveling thinks that all of these three types of goods-external and bodily good and goods of the heart and soul, chiefly virtue contribute to happiness. One should stay in unity with characteristics in order to be happy. For real human it contains justification as well as learning dynamics presence to do things. In the event that you exist, your daily life with character it must lead your daily life on the way to virtue. Thus, a virtuous life corresponding with aspect is a happy life. Stoic philosophers trust that contentment is the sum of most good a power enough for living well; fulfillment in arrangement with virtue, a living beings enough gain. In addition they belief that man can do that, which differs from the Aristotelian doctrine which claims that in addition to man's competences to satisfy his desire, you might also want some good prosperity in order to attain contentment.

Stoicism modeled even more problems of fulfillment. Cicero can say that "heaven ready, beliefs will ensure that he that has obeyed its laws will continually be a happy man, " for man, it is reflected as part of his nature. The ability to reason is what variance between men from pets. By giving right reason, you have attuned to reach the finish of his mother nature. When it happiness, it can be told that he's leading a virtue life, as virtue can be explained as perfect reason. Thus he has touched delight. Hence, reason is very exceptional to reach the peaceful and a happy life. The Stoic assumed that to attain the completion is to reach happiness. This can be done by existing with nature or by productive a virtuous life. Stoic getting together with part, taught happiness is an activity of the talk about of fulfilled really wants to desire. The Stoic's castoff evens the value of pleasure and pain. "The happy man is content with his present whole lot, regardless of what it is. " He cases that the man of smooth virtue will be happy even under torture, even on the bracket. The wellbeing of the happy man is very impermeable to the harshest converts of fate. He said that one must echo man's character should relate with pets, especially his capacity to reason and appear things and also his part as a student. Using this method one can dreamily live gladly.

5. 0 Comparison between Stoic and Epicureans view on happiness

While both the Epicureans and stoic philosophers highlight pleasure, the Epicurean understanding of contentment differs from the stoic understanding of happiness. Epicurus thought that we naturally search for pleasure and avoid pain. This procedure leading to contentment, then, is actually different for the Stoic.

Stoic beliefs differ from Epicurean beliefs in at least 3 ways. First, their ideas of mother nature differ. For the Stoic, self-defense is the first natural persona while pleasure performs this part for the Epicureans. This transformation disturbs their views of human brilliance as attached while for the Stoics, self-protection causes esteeming reason for itself, which causes the tranquility of a particular wroth to merit. The next variance between Stoic and Epicureans includes their views of the reactions. For the Epicurean realizes that just a few desires are necessary for a pleasant life and they can be easily fulfilled. Within the Epicurean talk about of delight one does not avoid needs, but one is not bothered by the inability to fulfill ones dreams either. Consequently, the epicurean is "unperturbed". The stoic, on the other palm is "imperturbable" because he or she totally removed sadness.

As your final point, the Epicureans and Stoic vary on the role of quality. For Stoics, quality by itself is enough for pleasure, and it away comes immediately from reason. The Epicureans assign pleasure to superiority, but this does not lead to delight. Rather, the normal person identifies that the best form of pleasure is joy. And motion achieved from the status of joy is the actions of the happy singly. This independent is peacefully, and they has known reasons for feeling tasteful.

6. 0 Conclusion

It was wonderful experience to talk about two great philosophies of all time. Even though their views on Happiness vary yet their remarkable contribution to the modern culture is unforgettable and unquestionable. Their rich contribution and showing enabled me to wide my perspective in this area. This project helped me to clarify their dissimilarities and comparisons on Happiness. WHEN I am the university student of Idea it widens my thinking and it will be a great help at the moment as well as in the future. Both philosophies given different point of view on contentment but their concept of happiness is nearly same because both philosophies saying that you need to search enjoyment in the right place but their way finding out happiness differs, Epicureans supplying importance worldly life for joy but Stoic giving importance to virtue and natural life. As summary I'd conclude this assignment saying, though the concept of each one ranges, let us compile everything mutually, and put forward the appropriate one for today's life.
