Chapter 21. Fear
Suppose that we do not know any philosophical comprehension of this feeling, neither the intuition of adults nor the insights of writers are known. Let's try, think about what's called from Adam.

The world, in general, is full of ugliness. The universe is overpopulated with eccentric creatures. But are these creatures terrifying the most indifferent nature? It is multifaceted and intricate. Fear is born only when a human eye is thrown around. Only man is commanded to marvel at the staggering disparity of the world, to experience a terrible discrepancy between the desired and the real. Our first conclusion: fear arises with a person. This certifies our consciousness. It has already been said that man is a special kind of being. Without him, there is no one to shudder at what nature did and he himself, Adam's descendant.
But the fear introduced by man forms the whole Universe. He nests on all tiers of human existence. Stoglavy and storuky, fear fills not only the consciousness, but also the abyss of the unconscious. Is it true that fear is owned by every human being without exception? That he has all-pervasive power? What is he - the deepest abyss in which people and nations perish? Finally, is it possible to overcome this feeling, or is mankind forever doomed to wield the beliefs of a multifaceted horror? Fear accompanies historical epochs and forms of social arrangement of people. There is reason to believe that as the universe cosmic evolution unfolds, a person will face new mysteries that will cause strong shocks and a sense of fear.
In today's world, fear lies in wait for people from everywhere. The terrible symptom was destructiveness in the manifestation of human nature. This phenomenon was investigated by K. Lorenz, E. Fromm, E. Toffler and other researchers. E. Toffler in the book "Shock of the Future" wrote about the fact that humanity captures an unknown psychological state, which in its effect can be equated to the disease. There is this disease and its name is "futuroshok", or "shock of the future". Mankind can not die from the fact that the storerooms of the earth are exhausted, nuclear energy will escape from control, or the tortured nature will die. People will die out because they can not withstand psychological stress.Futurochok is characterized by a sudden, overwhelming loss of sense of reality, the ability to navigate in life, caused by fear of the near future. Already at the beginning of this century millions of ordinary physically healthy and mentally normal people suddenly come face to face with the future. Will they be able to adapt to the ever-increasing pressure of events, knowledge, science, technology, various kinds of information? Will this lead to serious social and psychological consequences?
Is humanity only today faced with these problems? Is it only in our country that a person is pushed out of the usual niche? The medieval man saw the future as a mysterious and dark force. Even a joyful day he perceived with alarm: what if these pleasures turn into executions at the Last Judgment? Wars, epidemics, and hunger were perceived as signs of an impending end of the world. The frescoes of the temples depicting the Last Judgment episodes made the hearts of believers tremble at the thought of what awaits them beyond the being, in the afterlife.
However, in this century, astounding transformations began to appear. Toffler shows that the pace of change has increased unheard. Having created a powerful technique, a person changed the rhythm and flow of his life. And here it really turned out that the main trouble is not the shortage of raw materials for production, not the destruction of the ecological environment. Scientific thought tries to eliminate these catastrophes. The nightmare is different: the human psychological resources are not unlimited. It's not that an ozone hole is formed or an oil well is running low.
After the publication of Toffler's book, philosophers, politicians began to reflect on how well a person is adapted to change as a biological, psychological being. Neo-conservatives began to talk about how important it is for a person to feel the solidity of being. After all, in the past, the social cycle often correlated with the cultural cycle, the latter often being longer. Now, during the lifetime of one generation, the cultural cycles change one by one, creating an avalanche of civilizational upheavals.Toffler does not raise the question of what a psychological norm is. He believes that a person who is little adapted to changing reality is psychologically flawed. If he wants to adapt to reality, it is important for him to rebuild his psyche, to avoid futuroshok. But suppose people failed. People do not feel uncomfortable that everything around them is rapidly changing, is it possible to say that a person who has adapted to reality is not a neurotic, but a full-fledged person.
Is this a psychological norm - a man knocked out of the bosom of a family, out of habitual terrain, lost attachment and a sense of stability? Most likely, such a person who realizes unlimited freedom, and just turn out to be a psychopath.
A person born in a yaranga is able to enter an institution of higher learning and acquire a completely different social status. He can return to his native village and bring to his life elements of an unfamiliar culture. Toffler sees the source of futuroshok only in the car, in technology. This is its speed gives birth to unheard-of rates of mutations. That is why, as he believed, millions of people are seized with a growing sense of anxiety. They can not navigate in the surrounding life, they lose the ability to intelligently manage the events that are sweeping the avalanche on their heads. Unrequited fear, massive neuroses, unintelligible acts, unbridled acts of violence - all this, in the opinion of the American expert, are only the weak symptoms of the disease that await us.
Again we ask: is this phenomenon peculiar to our time alone? Of course, similar phenomena can be traced in any historical epoch. Imagine the state of the Scythian barbarian, captured and sold into slavery in some city of ancient Greece or Rome. Cut off from the familiar environment, faced face to face with unfamiliar culture, this man had to survive the state of shock.
Or an example of another kind. Let us recall Mark Twain's famous story "The Prince and the Pauper". A bare and indigent boy is in the position of a crown prince. But instead of thanking fate, he is experiencing constant anxiety, fear of an unusual reality.
However, most people who find themselves in an unfamiliar environment live in the hope of returning to their native country with the usual way of life or find comfort in that at any moment they may find themselves in this environment. Victims of futuroshok this consoling thought are deprived. In our country, the scale of social and cultural metamorphosis is fantastically enormous.
Tear a person from his native culture and throw him into a completely new environment, where he will have to react instantly to a host of completely new ideas about time, space, work, sex, etc. And if you still rob him of any hope of returning to a familiar social situation, confusion will grow into depression. Psychological numbness is a terrible syndrome of today's days.
