On the creative power of man

The creative power of a person determines the style of his life and life goals, that's why every person is free and responsible for his destiny.

Creative power is innate in nature and develops in childhood.

The creative power of man is the result of a long evolution.

The creative power of man affects all the mental processes of man (perception, memory, imagination, fantasy and dreams).

On fictional finalism

Fictional finalism is the concept that the behavior of a person is subordinated to the goals (fictions) he has set for himself.

At the heart of all goals are beliefs that are true for the subject, but their objectivity and realizability for other people are relative. For example, "I must become rich", "In heaven, I am rewarded for good deeds", "The main thing is to gain power and money".

A fictional goal explains the meaning of a person's actions and the history of his life.

On the impact of a child's position on his life style

The firstborn (the eldest child) in the family (deprived of a privileged position in the family with the birth of the youngest child) learns the strategy of survival alone without needing anybody's affection; seeks power and leadership.

Modern studies confirm that among the statesmen - the majority of first-born, including among US presidents and members of the US Congress.

The only child in the family is addicted and self-centered; in maturity he will experience that is no longer in the center of attention; he is characterized by difficulties in his relationships with peers.

Modern empirical studies do not support this thesis: the only child in the family is as contact, prosocial and emotionally stable as other children.

The second (average) child, competing with the first brother, grows rival and ambitious, sets himself unreasonably high goals.

The last (the youngest) child is a family spoony, but he is dependent on older children. This dependence on the elder can become high, and on the other hand, the child can form a desire for independence, which will lead to an internal conflict.

Individual Psychotherapy

The reason for the neurosis is a conflict between the desire for excellence and a sense of inferiority. The characteristics of the neurosis are as follows:

- wrong lifestyle (egocentrism, low activity, low social interest);

- a passive, effeminate life style.

A sense of inferiority can be overcome in several ways:

- by successful compensation, as a result of which the individual achieves the goal in the struggle for basic living blessings;

- by overcompensation (oppressed in childhood becomes a dictator, having received power);

- by going into the disease, which is a hidden tendency to achieve excellence. This is the way to neurosis.

Neurosis is not a disease, but a deformed life style, similar to a compensatory adaptation to the social environment. Therefore, the treatment of neurosis and is the correction of life goals of man.

Individual psychotherapy is divided into three main stages:

1) understanding of the patient's life style by the therapist;

2) help the patient in understanding himself and his behavior;

3) the formation of his heightened social interest.

The content of the first stage.

The patient is asked to tell about himself. Particular attention is paid to early childhood, position in the family, the presence of physical inferiority, hyperopeak or rejection. Not only words are important, but also non-verbal behavior. Additional material for analysis can be dreams, free associations, patient pictures, etc., which also forms an idea of the lifestyle and the event that provoked neurosis.

Methods of empathy, intuition and assumptions (suggesting hypotheses about the causes of the patient's behavior and checking them during the conversation) may be of great assistance in carrying out psychotherapy.

The content of the second stage.

Bringing the patient to realize his erroneous apperception, unrealistic (fictitious) life goals, the desire for egocentric excellence and as a consequence to the realization that the disease is the result of an incorrect lifestyle.

The therapist brings the patient to the awareness of the error carefully and tactfully, without imposing his own point of view on him. An important role in achieving the result of psychotherapeutic work is played by the community of the patient and the psychotherapist. Explanations should be understandable to the patient and should be based on his life experience. In this case, the therapist only points out mistakes, and the patient can make a real change in his nature himself.

The content of the third stage.

The patient is trained in such interpersonal contact with others that would facilitate the transfer of awakened social sentiments from him to other people.

This contact is achieved:

- encouraging the patient to manifest social co-operation;

- weakening the patient's sense of superiority and increased social interest;

- patient's choice of socially useful goals and encouraging him to achieve them.

As a result, selfish goals are replaced with useful life goals, which in turn removes neurotic psychic dependence and leads to recovery. Thus, individual psychology and individual psychotherapy focus on the integrity of the individual, emphasizing her creative character. Individual psychology is the forerunner of humanistic psychology and socially oriented psychotherapy.
