Professional deformation of the individual in business - Business psychology

Professional deformities of a person in business

When performing the same activity for many years, certain personal changes inevitably appear. The profession can both positively influence the personality, promote the development of personal maturity, the formation of the identity of the individual, and carry a negative impact, leading to destructive, pathological changes in the personality. Many people who have long been engaged in activities in one professional sphere experienced periods of recovery, stabilization, recession, crises, a feeling of fatigue, irritation, reduced efficiency, etc. These manifestations disrupt the integrity of the personality, reduce its adaptability, sustainability, adversely affect the productivity of the activity. Negative influence of activity in psychological research is designated as professional deformation (destruction), mental or occupational burnout.

The problem of negative consequences of the activity for a person is actual both in theoretical and practical plans. On the one hand, reflections on it provide food for understanding the mechanisms of professional development, the connection of such fundamental categories of psychology as consciousness and behavior. On the other hand, they allow you to enter new technologies of working with clients in individual and organizational consulting, coaching, training and personnel development.

The concept of professional personality deformities . Professional activity can cause personality changes that reduce productivity and adversely affect relationships with other participants in this process.

Professional deformations - personality changes under the influence of professional activity, which negatively affect the productivity of activities and relationships with other people.

In studies of professional deformations, many psychological approaches and directions are manifested: socio-psychological, organizational, psychoanalytic, etc. For example, the socio-psychological approach helps to explain the influence of social roles, attitudes, values on the person and behavior of a person; psychoanalytic - to understand the role of protective mechanisms in professional behavior, the adaptive capacity of the individual in relation to the professional environment, etc.

It should be noted that in psychologists the phrase "professional deformations" is perceived contradictorily: on the one hand, it is clear that we are talking about some negative impact of activities on the individual, on the other - it is implied that this influence does not go beyond the norm. The skeptical attitude towards this problem is caused by this proximity to the border of the norm, which raises doubts about the appropriateness of the application of this term in situations quite normal, concerning the vital activity of almost any professionally directed person. But, nevertheless, it is in this phrase (professional deformations) that the problem of the negative influence of the profession on a person is fixed in science.

More often than not, professional deformations are said when they want to emphasize the negative effect of activities on various aspects of human life. In everyday sense, at the same time, the features of behavior that arise in the representatives of different professions are emphasized and manifested even in cases when a person is not at work and can "rest" from its social role. It also refers to the emergence of unconscious habits of perceiving and assessing the phenomena of the surrounding world in accordance with professional objectives and standards, exaggerating the significance of certain aspects of activity.

Professional deformities are considered as the reasons hindering the professional development of a person along with age-related changes, fatigue from work, monotonous, prolonged mental tension, development crises, unfavorable socio-psychological conditions, etc.

The problem, in our opinion, is that this research area was too broad, it is difficult to identify an essential basis that would allow us to identify the most significant signs and mechanisms of professional deformations, to carry out comparative studies in relation to both specific professions, both and cultural communities.

According to the common point of view, professional deformations are manifested in behavior and interaction, in professional habits, in communication, in skills and inclinations, in the transformation of the individual's mental characteristics, violate the integrity of the individual, reduce its adaptability, stability, and adversely affect the productivity of the activity. They lead to changes in the existing structure of activities and personal qualities, which negatively affect the productivity of labor and interaction with other participants in this process. Moreover, their development is associated with profound processes of professionalization, features of protective behavior in professional activity. In particular, the type of activity, as well as the characteristics of the group, affect the structure of psychological defense and, as a consequence, the development of professional deformations. All this represents a wide range of various psychological phenomena that are difficult to relate clearly to each other.
