Satir's principles of transformation and 'use of home ' in counseling

"Change what you think" always is a phrases for some individuals facing dilemma. However, change is not an easy task scheduled to a set of assumptions deeply used root inside our culture, social marriage and personal histories (Mahoney & McCray-Patterson, 1992). Therefore, we have to recognize and acknowledge what keep us freezing and stuck to make decision with limitation. Viginia Satir's process of change is a way to assist people in making choices that raise self-esteem, provide self-accountability or responsibility, and move a person toward being more congruent with self applied and others. Needless to say, before we accomplish our clients, we not only need to deeply understand ourselves, but also understand and acknowledge our level of yearnings, targets, perceptions and feelings which might affect the counseling process. As a social worker in the foreseeable future, I am facing different dilemma and change is also a dilemma. However, how do I overcome it and become congruence to myself?
My Tale - Issue of My Further Analysis and Work
Two years back, I graduated from University and performed as programme officer in sociable agency. At that time, I believe I started my career journey with great future development. A 12 months later, I researched in this part-time get good at programme and keep working as a full time to earn money and experience. Within this year, I thought that I just need to go away my exam and obtain the license of communal work in order to progress pay. However, after i start the first semester of second yr, I noticed very stressful because of the difficult balance among work, research and placement. Firstly, my job is relatively demanding comparing to my first year. Second, I cannot give attention to study and deeply understand the elective course, especially satir's model. Thirdly, I cannot focus on my clients in my placement setting. Even though I know that the in your free time programme is very intense, I did not expect the dilemma such as this. One month in the past, I felt that we was outburst, no matter physical body or psychological state. I want to analyze well but I cannot; I want to do better in position but I cannot; and I want to do my job well but I cannot. I feel i am not congruence to inner self which made me emotional distress for long period of time. Therefore, I would like to truly have a change to deal with my situation. However, it's not an easy process.
The Satir model offers people the opportunity of transforming their old way of interacting by causing different choices and being more congruent (Satir & Baldwin, 1983). This likelihood can transform individuals' opinion about themselves, nurturing self-esteem, and giving them hope. Using this process provides staff with the chance to clients using their deepest pain, empathically hook up to a deeper degree of feeling the emotions. At that moment in time, clients would aid new perceptions and internal acceptance of past situations. In response to my situation, I came across that I wish to have better learning environment instead of just transferring the programme and receive the license. The choices I identified were maintaining the current situation and cross the programme without deep understand of programs or quitting the work and then spending much more time on mastering and find part-time job if the agenda is appropriate. AFTER I was considering these two choices, you can find possibility personally to change. I deeply thought and believed what I need now and for my future. ONCE I review what I did before few months, I finally understood and find out why I study social just work at the very starting that I wish to serve the population with professional knowledge and develop my sense of do it yourself to impact other's life by my life. Finally, I made a decision to quit the job. However, the decision cannot determine carelessly in awareness of my role of family and girl-friends.
Context of Change
Change happens all over. Satir mentioned that transformational change requires an understanding of how perceptions of the world enhance or diminish our ability to improve. Having already proven that change happens, Satir signifies that change that is transforming is manufactured in a safe, trusting and accepting environment (Satir et al. , 1991). WHILE I cannot balance studying, working and positioning, I've a thought that I'd quit each one. However, I'd not give up the MSW programme because it's my first goal in sociable service field. Then, only one I could do is to quit my job. Yet, as a part-time college student with full time job, I got afraid that we cannot maintain my financial support that will influence my family members and my tutor cost. Also, I am planning to get matrimony with my girl-friend. At the beginning, she did not support my decision. When she grasped what situation I had been facing, she arranged with my final decision and fully supports me. At the same time, my parents also fully support my decision. They told me that my own saving will do to aid my tuition fee and short time of living expense. What I need to do is focusing on my research and finding some part-time jobs whether it's appropriate with my plan. According to my family, my relationship with girl-friend and my financial support, it created a safe, trusting and accepting environment for me to change my notion of current situation and precede new belief.
Process of change
The change process is making the internal shift in perception to an external change possible which internal switch cannot happen without an accepting environment first being established (Sayles, 2002). This environment is necessary in building trust as the individual encounters, explores, and acknowledges own feelings. As the thoughts are thought and articulated, the old belief is transformed into a fresh understanding and leading to a new idea. This new belief influences a person at the level of self, which results in a new awareness of what's externally possible. To apply to my report, when I thought my feelings, it really takes time, not forgetting being the point out of sense of feeling. Therefore, when I pointed out that the workload from works, study and positioning were overloaded and impact my emotional status which directly influenced my physiological express, such as insomnia and no appetite, I out of the blue possessed a thought that I want to quit the work. During this instant, I experience chaos that there were a lot of uncertainties and my earlier plan should be adjusted. However, I tried out to hear myself and deeply thought about my psychological point out in terms of different situations. Therefore, I determine to meet my expectation and yearnings which is spending much more time on learning and placement. At exactly the same time, I felt which i get to maintain fee of myself, however, not from the environment.
Core component in the experience of change - Usage of self
The use of self is the most powerful tool. Through the period that i was baffling what I am doing, I cannot concentrate on the client. What I was doing is just listening their opinion but I had not been helping them. The main one of core factor I learned in Satir model is usually to be congruent being in touch with myself, such as my feelings, thoughts, goals and yearnings to be able to get in touch with the general life energy and connect with the client. However, before we hook up with the client, as a therapist, I have to experience my iceberg and accept myself. Directly after we experiences popularity of ourselves, we'd allow others, including their context and feels responsible for oneself. This creates an event of peace, vitality, harmony, connectedness and hope for the counseling process.
Transformational change happens as we look at the impact of an event on our lives and make a choice to maintain charge of how the event impacts our life. As the social worker, we need to focus on the internal emails and feelings produced a perception that gets translated into our coping ways of the given event. Then, change is a situation in which individuals go through the possibility to be responsible for what is believed, believed, and experienced. Through transformational process, we not only have confidence in ourselves, but also raise our self-esteem and believe change can be done. Needless to say, before change is happened, we have to adopt the pain of the past in the present and feel the difference in the center of the well-being. All of the above isn't just about the customers, but also about us, the public worker. Let's begin to use of home.
