The collective unconscious

Carl Jung believed our psyche included 3 parts - the mindful, the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious.

He illustrated this by requesting us to assume our heads like exotic islands. The tiny part above the drinking water is our conscious. Consciousness is the experience of the here and today. It's the smallest part of our psyche.

Jung considered the ego to be the centre of the field of awareness and the ego is merely concerned with conscious experience.

The area of the island below the water is described as the non-public unconscious. The personal unconscious contains both pre conscious and unconscious.

All that was once conscious to the person is stored in the subjective personal unconscious. Unlike Freud, Jung believed the personal unconscious did not include instincts. However, he did believe it contained suppressed material. Jung found the unconscious as a reservoir of both repressed material and creativity

The Collective Unconscious is symbolised by the ocean foundation linking all the hawaiian islands together. It's the unconscious part of our own mind we inherit from our ancestors. It has additionally been described as our psychic inheritance. Inside the collective unconscious is the shared quest, a seek out interpretation and a tank of knowledge we are all given birth to with. It influences all or our experience and behaviour, especially our mental ones.

Examples of encounters that show the effects of the Collective Unconscious are

  • Love initially Sight
  • De Ja Vu
  • Immediate popularity of certain myths

Jung's archetypes are referred to as the articles of the collective unconscious head. They act as an organising rule on the things we do or see. Archetypes are not biological drives such as Freud's ideas but are more spiritual demands.

Examples of Archetypes

Mother Archetype - We enter into this world prepared to want a mom. The Mom Archetype is our in-built capability to recognise a certain romance - that of mothering. Even when an archetype doesn't have a particular real person available, we have a tendency to personify the archetype, that is, turn it into a mythological "story-book" identity. This identity symbolizes the archetype.

The Shadow

Sex & Life intuition are stored in the Shadow which originates from our pre real human past. It's the dark side of our ego, and the bad we can handle is stored in the shadow. The shadow is amoral, it is neither nor bad. It is like an creature it just does what it can to be able to survive. It is the creature in us, one second an pet animal can be nurturing to its litter, the next it is ferocious and savage to be able to make it through. Humans see the animal world as being brutal and savage, therefore, the shadow becomes something of any garbage can for the parts of ourselves we cannot say that to.

Persona

The persona is described as the cover up you put on before you face the outside world.

At its worst, it could be mistaken, even by ourselves, for our true mother nature. Sometimes we believe that we really are what we should pretend to be!

Anima and Animus is the part of our personal that play the role of male or female

The anima is the feminine aspect present in the collective unconscious of men and animus is the male aspect within the collective unconscious of women. .

According to Jung there are no permanent numbers of archetypes and many seem to be to overlap.

The self is the most crucial archetype of all. It is the unity of the personality.

The Dynamics of the Psyche

Jung provides us 3 guidelines of the psyche

Principle of Opposites - Every wish always immediately has an opposite. If I have a good thought then I cannot help but have a bad thought. To be able to know good, you got to know bad. Matching to Jung it is the opposition that creates the power in the psyche.

Principle of Equivalence - The vitality created by the opposites is given to both sides similarly (i. e. both thoughts bad and the good). If you face your other choice, or wish then your energy that is at this choice will go towards do it yourself improvement. However, if you deny the other choice existed the energy should go towards creating a complex.

A Complex is a suppressed thought or feeling that clusters around some theme provided by an archetype. In the event that you deny ever creating a bad thought, you may put that thought in form proposed by the Shadow. In the event that you pretend all of your life you are just good then all the times you do good that other area goes into organic across the Shadow. The complex will then create a life of its own and it'll haunt you.

Principle of Entropy - This is the inclination for opposites to get together or the even distribution of energy.

When we could young, the opposites will tend to be extreme, and so we tend to have a lot of energy. For instance, adolescents tend to exaggerate male-female differences, with boys hoping hard to be macho and ladies trying similarly hard to be womanly. Therefore their sexual activity is spent with great amounts of energy! Plus, adolescents often swing in one extreme to some other, being outrageous and crazy about a minute and finding religion the next.

As we get older, most of us become more comfortable with our different facets. We live somewhat less naively idealistic and realize that we are mixtures of good and bad. We have been less threatened by the opposite making love within us and be more androgynous. Even physically, in later years, men and women become more similarly. This technique of growing above our opposites, of witnessing both sides of who were, is called transcendence.

The Self - the purpose of life is to realize the self. The self can be an archetype that signify the transcendence of all opposites. It is a more healthy position for the psyche
