International region - Sociology of International Relations

International Region

At the end of XX century. the system of interaction between peoples (international relations) has evolved into the "world politics", which, along with the traditional problem of war and peace, pays close attention to three processes - < globalization, integration and regionalization. Each of them exceeds the space of interstate relations, including not only the relations between groups and structures, but and unstructured common features. The situational saturation of the global dimension has complicated the strategic vision and actualized the problem of the design resources of the international environment. Therefore, in the situation of postulated openness of societies, the construction of the region from the internal task of the state (and in this sense purely administrative and economic problem) has turned into an independent process of international relations, and the international region has become the object of world politics.

The European Union, the CIS, the Mediterranean region, the Baltic region, NAFTA, the APR, the Northern Dimension, MERCOSUR, BRICS, etc. are examples of international regions.

The invention of the region as a spatial form of social problems belongs to the Chicago School of Sociology. In the mid-1990s. American researchers have attempted to radically rethink the views on regional relations from the perspective of strategic assessments of a global scale, using for this purpose the conceptualization of observations of Middle Eastern processes in the international environment. So there was a project to create the "Greater Middle East" - an international macroregion, which includes significant areas of the Eurasian continent.

In the European scientific tradition, the methodology of constructing regional identity, adherence to European values, functional features of sociocultural ties is brought to the forefront.

The analytical approaches of United States international experts are characterized by the study of the functional features of international regions. In the Concept of Foreign Policy of the United States, a special dimension is devoted to the regional dimension. IV, describing the specifics of regional problems of practical diplomacy.

In the modern global structure, it is customary to distinguish three ideal designs - the "officially constructed region" (NAFTA, EU), spontaneous region ( growth triangle between Singapore and parts of Indonesia and Malaysia) and selected region (subjective space). The boundaries of regional regulations, established by a system of treaties and institutions, transform the physical space subjected to regionalization into an actor without sovereignty.

In world politics, manipulating multiple designs, the international region appears as a tool for restructuring spatial images, "in which geographical barriers and political boundaries do not protect anything" (I. Devyatko).
