Sociology of Food in USA

Sociology of food in USA

  1. INTRODUCTION

Man and food have close relationship with each other and this association has also compelled the person to find new means and new types of food, to bring variety and sustainability in their food chain. Initially the food was only harvested like fruits and vegetables or was acquired, by means of meats, of hunting animals. With the progress in civilization and the technology, all happening of production, syndication and consumption modified and with this change brought up the problem like health, ethical, environmental, labor and the ethnic. When these issues arrived to focus, the whole scenario helped bring the field of sociology of food. This field helps to study the way the food happens to be produced, then goes to the type of distribution and the way the people around the country or the world take in it. Along with all other factors, this entire procedure for food chain also has the cultural impact and this impact make a difference the society in several ways. Here, we will discuss the sociology of food in USA and exactly how it is creating interpersonal problems.

  1. OBJECTIVE PRESENTATION OF THE SOCIAL CONDITION

In the countries like America, it is not an ancient thought that food used to be cooked at home and was considered as the item that connects the family alongside one another and helps those to sit together and connect to each other. It had been once the choice that food should be prepared at home and the prep of food itself required a great deal of fresh elements and specially enjoys. After the professional revolution, along with other concepts, the idea of food as the bonding power also changed. Industrial trend not only increased the velocity of improvement in knowledge and technology, but also, altered the rate of life. Industrial revolution also provided the opportunity to work, therefore, the majority of the family started out working. People became busy in making profits and cooking dishes at home became problematic for folks and because of this the food industry progressed with an extent that this has taken the area in every home of USA. Food production, circulation and consumption have grown to be one of the primary market sectors not only in USA, but, all over the world.

  1. SUBJECTIVE Display OF WHY THE SOCIAL CONDITION IS ACTUALLY A SOCIAL PROBLEM

Although we are actually residing in the contemporary society which revolves around becoming self-sufficient and financially stable, therefore, people have to spend additional time at workplaces, thus, decreasing enough time people used to spend their time. Most of that point was devoted to making and feeding family members. The large quantity of readymade food including: fast food drinks and junk food provided a whole lot of solutions for folks. Food is an important source to generate connections and it is considered that baking and serving proper foods reestablishes and reinforces the bond between different family and helps those to send time with each other (Debevec and Tivadar). Taking, cooking of food out of our day to day lives is triggering a great deal of cultural issues, that dominating our approach to life and relationships.

Food Production

Five decades back again, the production of food got never been an issue. Countries usually depended on their own main plants to meet the needs of their population, but, with the goes by of time, transport, technology, prosperity and wealth of some countries provided those changes to get more and better food because of their population. One example is that Asian countries are acquiring land in African countries. This method of development, in overseas countries is to meet up with the increasing need of the Asian countries to fulfill the demand of the meals, due to upsurge in population in urban areas. This will not only create social concern for the people of African countries, but, also in the countries this food is consumed because the abnormal export of the crops of African countries will put pressure on the society because people will never be able to benefit from their own land, thus creating public distress. Also, the people in Asian countries, who'll be consuming those products, will have to pay more for it due to upsurge in cost anticipated to transport. Thus, a public divide will arise because folks of middle and lower classes will have to pay more, even beyond their means, to have the articles of basic need (Gunasekera and Finnigan). Second, with the progress of technology, transgenic technology is used to genetically changed vegetation or the better plants. This technology is employed all around the globe, but, still there are societies which consider them against their values and system. There are societies who collectively thing that producing food by producing foreign agent into the original form might have negative impact on the health of people and the originality of the crops. People think that since all the plants grown naturally will be the best form of the meals which is not for the advantage of society to genetically improve the food and increase production, which might bargain the fitness of the people, that may ultimately reflect on society (Akumo and Riedel). Thirdly, sustainability in addition has become an important issue in food development. With upsurge in populace, demand of eating products and beef has increased and in order to meet up with the needs several scientific methods are used. Eight hundred million people on the planet suffer from malnutrition, whereas, nearly four hundred million people are obese. The increase in prosperity and society has increased the demand of the products, but, to be able to improve more meat giving animals, more water and food for them is necessary. This causes an imbalance in the surroundings because there is already sacristy of this particular and the meals of these family pets need to grow and this excessive necessity compels humans to utilize unnatural ways to expand food and even boost the speed of growth of family pets. Demand of these foods has increased, but, so does indeed their price and the costs of these products are receiving out of reach of common people, especially in underdeveloped countries. This also crease interpersonal imbalance and the working class again must suffer credited to insufficient funds. (Reisch and Eberle)

Food Distribution

Food distributions systems are the network and spread food products from coast to coast. The way to obtain food actually is determined by the demand of the product in a certain area, but, certain food items are produced which may be demanded in various marketplaces comprising of variety of cultural classes and this different in public status may also affect the option of the merchandise. The availability of these products is also reliant on the purchasing power of the customer. There the distribution is also affected by this, thus making these products unavailable to the lower school (FAO). The primary issue associated with the distribution systems is the fact that there are extremely less volume of markets that sell their products locally. Since, these products are sent to other towns and places, thus increasing the price tag on the product. The excessive shelling out for distribution and the money allocated to advertising is received from the consumer, which again influences the working course of the contemporary society (Martinez, Palm and Pra). The people who used to come at the churches pantry to get food have increased 3 x since 2008. But, the amount of food that was allocated to these services has reduced due to diminish in budget. Thus this unequal supply of food to these cathedral services have put the pressure to the churches to nourish the peed that are deserving and are reliant on them. Uneven distribution of food and makes people unable to get their own food (Greenberg, Greenberg and Mazza).

Food Consumption

The ingestion of the meals is greatly inspired by the income of the buyer. The families which have better income spend big money on food and especially on pretty and expensive food items. Therefore, a cultural divide is also created and the food items are produced which can only be used by the people who are financially steady (Jappelli and Pistaferri). Due to busy lifestyles the eating out and consuming readymade food is increasing swiftly in the country. Although, research show that the meals that is manufactured and eaten at home has good health and social effects. In the dining room table, family get the chance to interact with one another, develop better relationship and come to know about lives of one another, thus creating better family bond and increasing harmony in the culture (Eisenberg, Olson and Neumark-Sztainer). Since the people consume a lot of food outside, therefore, their selection of food is also influenced by individuals around them. Individuals who eat at the public places usually eat unhealthy and fatty food and most of the changing times they spend additional money, than their average spending, this brings about compromised health and funds. The obese and economically unpredictable people further influences the balance of the modern culture (Mcferran, Dahl and Fitzsimons).

  1. SOCIAL CHANGE

Food creation industry has altered its molded since previous eight decades and today exactly what was considered the area of expertise of home foods come in packaging. Income has increased the demand for expensive foods and the meals market is becoming global. All these factors are affecting the modern culture because travelling from far off places makes, even the most frequent things expensive, thus so that it is expensive for major portion of society. This issue can be reduced by introduced more local marketplaces and by promoting local products. In addition, alternate products to protein like second level protein should be motivated and produced, to meet the needs of folks. Pulses can also serve as the alternative source for proteins; therefore, producing this item can help in achieving sustainability in food chain.

Food distribution has always been the issue all around the globe, but, now we come to see even the global distribution of food. Now even the meals of Sydney can reach any area of the world. Still there are countries that are facing unequal circulation of food ensuing on malnutrition. Uneven syndication is also because of the uneven earnings of different sections of the world. Also different marketplaces have different prices of same item and even. This problem can be solved by launching centralized syndication system and centralized prices. These systems may also help the working category to afford everything and everything can become open to everyone, regardless of the social class. Also, this centralized system will be helpful in ensuring that every member of the modern culture is evenly treaty and has access to everything he needs.

The ingestion of food can only be managed by the consumer. The main should be the heath of the client, that customer should take well balanced diet which diet may help to give better and healthy people to the society. People should also, consider the result of decrease in family meal on the sociable and family life. . There should be balance in work and family life and the increase in social problems can be caused if this balance is disturbed. Although, it is easier and better to get the meals from restaurants, but, restaurants cannot make up for the love of the family and communication with family. Also, the majority of the times, the food consumed outdoors is poor and unhygienic, that can bring about a ailment, will demand money for witnessing a physician and will put extra strain on the finances. The government should also conduct understanding programs about the value of meals made at home and the significance of well-balanced diet.

  1. CONCLUSION

Sociology of food is an important topic and sociology of food in USA is also. Three different facets of food string: production, syndication and consumption. There are a number of interpersonal issues in every three aspects and the most dominant ones are credited to uneven income of different segments of the society. So, in order to meet the most frequent needs of all the people, it's important to get if not centralized then managed system that can ensure that all marketplaces have same price. Additionally, the intake of the food also needs to be in line with the needs of the body and unnecessary or unbalanced. A whole lot work should be done to the sociology of food in USA in every three areas i. . e production, distribution and ingestion.
